PHOENIX– Sun Devil Baseball sophomore Spencer Torkelson has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the Opening Week of the 2019 season, the league office announced today.
Torkelson opened the season batting 9-of-14 (.643) with nine RBIs, two doubles and five runs scored as he led ASU to a season opening sweep over the Notre Dame in a three-game series in which the Devils outscored the Irish, 46-13
He was a perfect 6-for-6 with runners in scoring position and was successful in advancing runners 9-of-13 times over the course of the weekend. Of his nine total RBIs on the weekend, seven of the them came with two outs.
Torkelson is currently second in the Pac-12 in both batting average (.643) and RBIs (9). The nine RBIs were 12thnationally over the opening weekend of action. His nine hits lead the Pac-12 and are ranked fifth nationally.
Dating back to last season, Torkelson has now reached base in 42 consecutive games. After the opening weekend, the sophomore now has multiple RBIs in 18 of his 58 career starts (.310) and multiple hits in 22 of those (.379).
It is the second time in Torkelson's career earning the honor. The unanimous preseason All-American now makes it 149 all-time Pac-12 Player of the Week honors for the Sun Devil Baseball program.
Sun Devil Baseball continues the season on Wednesday with a midweek tilt against San Diego at 6:30 p.m. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium before opening a three-game series against UC Davis on Friday.
