TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil women's swimming and diving team earned a ranking in this month's TYR/CSCAA Division I Poll, sitting at No. 18 in the final poll of the regular season.
The ranking is the highest season-ending number for the Sun Devils in over two years, and also shows the improvement of the women from the start of the season, as the squad was ranked No. 24 in the preseason ranking but has since fallen out of that Oct. 10 poll.
The honor comes days after the women set two school records against Arizona, with Cierra Runge setting the top time in the 200 freestyle while Emma Nordin did so in the 1000 freestyle. Runge earned Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week honors for her performance, while diver Ashley McCool joined her as this week's Pac-12 Diver of the Week.
Finishing up the regular season last weekend, the women notched 21 B-Cuts during the year and only look to improve at the Pac-12 Championships later this month.
Chloe Isleta has been spectacular this season, taking nine first place finishes in the backstroke events in dual meets so far. Isleta has also never placed lower than third in those events, despite competing 16 times. She holds B-Cuts in both the 100 and 200 backstroke.
Nordin has also been a competitor to watch in the distance events culminated by her school record swim in the 1000 freestyle in Tucson. Nordin holds 14 podium finishes in various freestyle events this season ranging from the 100 to 1000 freestyle, displaying her versatility in the pool. She holds NCAA B-Cuts in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyles.
As a team, the women have placed several times on the top-10 in Arizona State history list this season alone to the tune of 18 additions. Freshman Ruby Martin has added three of her own in the 200 butterfly, including the fourth, fifth and eighth best times in school history. Isleta added four of her own – two in the 100 back and two in the 200 back – while Fanny Teijonsalo has also added three times to the 100 butterfly.
The Sun Devil women now turn their attention to training for the Pac-12 Championships. The action kicks off on Feb. 27 and lasts until March 2, taking place in Federal Way, Wash. at the King County Aquatics Center.
