Rob Edwards and Zylan Cheatham sat on the bench against Arizona last season, frustrated that they couldn't make an impact in the game that ended in an 84-78 Sun Devil loss in Tucson. They had a conversation, one that envisioned ASU (15-6; 6-3 Pac-12) ending its recent struggles against the Wildcats (14-8; 5-4 Pac-12).

"I remember me and Rob looking at each other and saying, 'we are going to turn it up next season,' said Cheatham. "They have won in all different types of ways, so Rob and I just talked about changing this not just for our sake, but for Bobby Hurley's sake ."

On Thursday, Cheatham and Edwards were essential alongside Remy Martin in the Sun Devils 95-88 overtime win against the Wildcats. In typical rivalry fashion, it was a one-possession game with the shot clock off.

"When we got into our huddle (after regulation), our message was, 'Okay they want to play for five more minutes then let's do it,'" said Cheatham. "We've conditioned, we've trained for this, let's put our best foot forward and live with the results."

MOST REBOUNDS BY SUN DEVIL

22, Rick Taylor (16 points) vs. San Francisco (Dec. 30, 1977)
22, Paul Stovall (27 points) vs. NAU (Jan. 23, 1971)

With their best foot forward, the Sun Devils jumped to a 7-0 run to start overtime and combated the Wildcats' free-throws with eight points from Martin and seven boards from Cheatham.

Martin wasn't only clutch in the extra five minutes, he drilled back-to-back triples and scored on a nifty up-and-under move to regain the lead after a 15-4 Wildcat run. His momentum-changing plays were a portion of his career-high 31 point performance that ended with a big smile, looking up at the crowd of 14,731 with his fist raised in the air.

"He was doing a nice job of maintaining his handle and letting the play develop and then figuring out what the right read was," said Hurley. "He made some really good, in tight-quarters, bounce pass and quick passes to Lake and Mello and Zylan. He was fantastic with that."

When asked if this was his best game ever, Martin responded with that same smile.

"Yeah, because it was U of A," said Martin. "It doesn't matter if I had two points and four assists, a win against U of A makes it my best game ever."

Martin is finally healthy and has found his balance between his scoring passing. He assisted on eight baskets against the Wildcats and has had a leadership mentality.

"Whatever the team needs me to do at that moment, I am willing to do," said Martin.

Cheatham and Edwards also had career nights. Cheatham grabbed his career-high in rebounds (22) after snagging 20 against UCLA and Edwards scored his ASU career-high of 19.

Of course, a rivalry game can add intensity inside a locker room. Before arriving at Wells Fargo Arena, Hurley had a message for his team at the practice court.

His message included 92 sprints, one for every point that he has lost by to Arizona in his six meetings with the visitors from Southern Arizona. In front of the entire roster, Hurley ran back and forth with his team clapping him on, suffering one more time to symbolize a new chapter starting in the ASU-U of A rivalry.

"He said it (the suffering) stops tonight, and it obviously did," said Cheatham. "He makes you want to go for war for him, he pushes you to a new limit, he makes you feel like you're capable of more than you are."

Arizona State has now won four of its last five and owns six conference victories after finishing with eight just a year ago when the program reach the NCAA Tournament. They shot 55.6 percent for the game, 72.7 percent in the second half, and had five players in double figures.

The Sun Devils are back on the floor next at home against Washington State at on Feb. 7. The 6 p.m. tip-off can be viewed on Pac-12 Networks and heard on ESPN Radio 620 AM.

PLAYER QUOTES
ZYLAN CHEATHAM

"Growing up here and seeing the dominance Arizona has had over our program, for me to come back home in my first Territorial Cup game to come out victorious mean a lot to me. Considering all the stuff I've witnessed this program go through in that game and all that Coach Hurley has been through, it just means the world to me."

REMY MARTIN
"Yea, I just did it for my guys and this whole ASU community. We did it for Coach Hurley and this staff. It's personal and when it gets personal it ups the level of intensity. Me loving Hurley and loving the ASU community and seeing what its been through against Arizona was something the team and I took on personally. t means so much to me right now and I am so tired. I am so tired, I really am. This is for ASU nation."

ZYLAN CHEATHAM ON ROB EDWARDS SPARKING THE OFFENSE
"We all know Rob is a great scorer and to see him confident and not really thinking about it, that sparks our offense. Remy had 31, I just found that out. When he is scoring like that it is going to be tough to beat us."

REMY ON FINDING BALANCE BETWEEN SCORING AND PASSING
"It is something that the team needs. Whatever the team needs I'm willing to do. It is really all credit to the guys. I can't get eight assists in the guys don't make anything. Credit to them and to Zylan getting 22 boards and throwing outlets to me so I can make a play. It is a collective group, but it is definitely something that I've thought about. Whatever the team needs me to do at that moment I am willing to do."

REMY ON WHAT IS HARDER...31 POINTS OR ONE TURNOVER
"I don't know why, but when you said that I just thought about the free throw I missed to make it 32, but I didn't like that one turnover I wish it was gone. The points definitely helped the team and helped us get the win, so I loved the 31 points."

ON GUARDING JUSTIN COLEMAN LATE
"I knew we needed a stop. He was getting into the lane and creating for everyone else and scoring and finishing. They trusted me to take that assignment on and that is just a credit to our programs and the type of situations I'm in. I took it personally, I knew that if I could somehow slow him down and keep him out of the paint we won't have to help as much. It limited the amount of catch and shoots they were able to get and like I said I just took it personally and did my best with it."

ZYLAN ON GETTING 20 REBOUNDS
"Honestly I don't even notice until the end. I know in the first half they had 8 or 9 offensive rebounds and that is something we talked about at halftime. That was something we knew we had to limit because they scored every time they got an offensive rebound. I knew that keeping them off the glass was going to benefit us. Like what Remy said, whatever the teams needs that is what I try to do."

REMY ASKED ABOUT IF THAT IT IS AS GOOD AS HE HAS PLAYED IN COLLEGE
"Yea because it was Arizona It doesn't matter if I had two points and four assists, a win against Arizona makes it my best game."

ZYLAN ON TALKING WITH ROB EDWARDS LAST YEAR ABOUT BEATING ARIZONA
"We made a point of emphasis last year to drive out there and support our guys. Obviously we came up short and their crowd was antagonizing us and doing what opposing crowds do I remember me and Rob looking at each other and saying, 'we are going to turn it up next season.' It's been years of them winning and they've destroyed us and won by a couple points. They have won all different type of way, so me and Rob just talked about changing this not just for our sake, but for Coach Hurley's sake."

ZYLAN ON IF REMY'S EMOTION ENERGIZES THE TEAM

"That's a key point of emphasis, energy. You hear every program in the country talking about how important energy is. When he's hitting shots like that and he gets the crowd going, it takes some stress off of your shoulders. When you just battle so hard defensively and finally got a stop and get a rebound. He (Remy Martin) comes down and makes a three and makes them call a timeout. It's an unbelievable place and anytime he does that, I definitely acknowledge him, anytime anyone does that I acknowledge that and it gets our team going.

ZYLAN REACTION ON COACH HURLEY FALLING AFTER GETTING HIT IN THE FACE
"He's a character for sure, just like us, he's intense, he's into the game. You can  only respect that from a player to coach standpoint. If you guys would of saw him earlier, you would have a whole different respect for him. He's a lunatic, he's crazy. He brought us in pregame shoot-a-round and we all are confused because we always watch film before we go to shoot-a-round. We get in there and  we're on the court and we are like "What are we doing, we're not dressed, we're like what's going on." He makes us read each game from the moment he got here, each ASU vs. Arizona match up. [He] reads the score and every point differential he ran a line for each point. The year we lost by 38, he ran 38 lines and a total of I would want to say of probably a hundred, I don't know. He's just sitting here just running and we are all the sideline clapping and cheering him on. That was pretty much his message to us, he's a nut. He told us the suffering is over. He's going to suffer one more time and he's going to go through what he went through these last couple years. He said it stops tonight and obviously it did. He makes you want to battle for him. He pushes you to a new limit, he makes you feel like you're capable of more than you are. We just tried to come out and do our jobs. Of course. He still showered, got to shoot-around and he was still intense the same way. He's really a lunatic, I don't think you understand, he's really crazy."

REMY REACTION ON COACH HURLEY FALLING AFTER GETTING HIT IN THE FACE
"He's a warrior, you see he bounced right back up. It didn't phase him. It would make you want to play today."

ZYLAN ON KEEPING THE LEAD ONCE THEY GOT IT KEEPING COACH HURLEY IN MIND
"For sure. I was definitely keeping him in thought the whole  game. Even when it didn't look good, we found a way. We battled through it, we stayed together, we called the guys and said it was going to be a forty-minute war, we knew it wasn't going to be easy, that's how rivalry games go. We made plays and came out victorious."

CHEATHAM ON THE TEAM'S CONFIDENCE AGAINST IN OVERTIME
"Of course. We go into everything confident. When we got into our huddle, our message was, okay they want to play for five more minutes then let's do it. We've conditioned, we've trained for this, let's do it. Let's put our best foot forward and live with the results."

REMY MARTIN ON THE CROWD
"The fans give us that burst of energy that every program needs. A big shot, everybody was there, the student section was there. They were cheering us on from start to finish. That just shows what ASU is about now. It's a change of culture, it's time for us to do what we are capable of doing. Today was a start and the fans helped us all the way through and I just want to say thank you to them and thank you for everybody that was cheering us on. That didn't go away when we were having little issues earlier in the season. They stayed through it, stayed with us and we gave them want they want."

ZYLAN CHEATHAM ON HOW IMPORTANT GUARD PLAY WAS
"It's imperative. We knew that they were very guard oriented, in the past years they've been pretty big with DeAndre Ayton and some of those guys. We knew that it was going to be a really guard game this game and we tried to take it personal. We prepared for it, we had a game plan. It wasn't pretty, we still made mistakes, a lot of mistakes actually and we just kept chipping away no matter what. We never got discouraged and we were able to come out victorious."
