ATLANTA, Ga. – Several Sun Devils represented ASU in the finals tonight on day three of the 2019 U.S. Open Championships, including five top-15 finishes. The field included current Sun Devils, an Olympian training for Tokyo in Tempe and an incoming Sun Devil next fall.
Sophomore Cody Bybee put up the highest finish by a current Sun Devil tonight, taking sixth in the 100 fly. He was one of three to compete in the finals this evening joined by Evan Carlson in 12th and freshman Alex Colson in 31st.
The 200 free was an equally heavily represented event, with gold medalist Allison Schmitt winning the women's event. Schmitt, whose brother Derek is an assistant coach on the Sun Devil staff, chose Tempe and Bob Bowman to train for Tokyo 2020. She was followed again by Bybee on the men's side in 16th, Jack Dolan in 24th, incoming freshman Lleyton Plattel in 26th and current freshman Julian Hill in 29th.
Sijla Kansakoski also performed well tonight, taking 10th place with a time of 1:09.00 in the preliminary round to earn a spot in the finals in the 100 breast. She returned in the evening to shave a little off her time, touching the wall at 1:08.98 for 10th place overall in a field of nearly 130 swimmers.
Rounding out the evening were Zach Poti and Jack Dolan in the 100 back. Poti finished in 12th place in the preliminary round with a time of 55.87 and returned in the evening to shave nearly a third of a second off his morning time. The senior took home 14th place while Dolan finished up with a 32nd place finish for the freshman.
