TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil men's and women's swimming and diving kicks off the New Year with their first dual meet since November, welcoming the Northwestern Wildcats into town for a Saturday morning matchup. The meet at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center is set for an 11 a.m. start time.
Since their last respective competitions in November, the swimming and diving squads have been completing their winter training in preparation for the beginning of championship season with the new year. Swimming last took the block in Greensboro, N.C. at the NC State Invitational where both genders put up respectable times including several NCAA cuts.
Emma Nordin headlined those quick times, touching the wall at 15:58.90 in the mile in North Carolina for the current sixth fastest time in Division I swimming. On top of that feat, her 1000 split in that same swim is also good for the fourth-fastest time to secure two top-10 finishes with a single swim. The women also followed with a speedy relay time, going 7:01.31 in the 800 free relay for the fifth-best time in DI.
Over on the men's side, the Sun Devil sprinters turned heads at NC State including Carter Swift who put up the 11th-best time in the national in the 100 free at 42.46. Zach Poti joined Swift among the nation's fastest, this time in the 200 back at a time of 1:41.34.
On top of individual achievements, the men also put up several of the country's best relay times. They currently sit at No. 8 with their time of 1:17.67 in the 200 free relay, No. 2 at 2:49.94 in the 400 free relay, No. 6 at 6:19.69 in the 800 free relay and No. 7 at 1:24.66 in the 200 medley relay.
Diver Youssef Selim has also set himself among the top in diving so far this season, currently holding the sixth-highest score in the one-meter at 367.73 and No. 15 in three-meter at 369.45. For his efforts in the month of November he was also awarded Pac-12 Diver of the Month.
Action against the Wildcats kicks off Sat., Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. local time. The meet at the Mona Plummer Center is free to all fans, and fans can keep up with all the action of Sun Devil swimming and diving by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
