FORT WORTH, Texas – Arizona State freshman newcomer Cohlton Schultz (130 kg) finished off his run at Senior Nationals as the Greco-Roman 130 kg champion Saturday, while his teammate Zahid Valencia went 4-0 to earn a spot in the 86 kg final on Sunday.
Schultz, the top-seeded wrestler at 130 kg, came out and dominated right from the start, pinning back-to-back opponents in his first two matches of the weekend. He would go on to win by superiority in the semifinals and sneak by Jacob Mitchell, 2-0, to be crowned Senior Nationals champion.
The freshman heavyweight qualifies to compete at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, set to take place April 4-5 in State College, Pennsylvania.
The men's freestyle division kicked off its competition schedule Saturday, as three current Sun Devils placed themselves in position to claim a top-five placement.
Z. Valencia earned a pair of wins by superiority to start the tournament and battled to a 3-2 win in his quarterfinal bout. A meeting with freshman Aaron Brooks of Penn State stood in the way of reaching the final on Sunday. The semifinal match proved to be a good test for Valencia, as Brooks kept it within striking distance the whole match, but Valencia would ultimately take the victory, 6-0. Tomorrow's championship match-up will be pitted against Myles Martin, a former Ohio State Buckeye.
Anthony Valencia (74 kg) and Tanner Hall (125 kg) will both have a shot at third place finishes Sunday. A. Valencia will face Alec Pantaleo in the consolation of 4, while Hall matches up against Nick Nevills.
