TEMPE, Ariz. – Matt Hill and the Sun Devil men's tennis squad are proud to announce their 2020 schedule headlined by matches with five of the top-10 tennis teams in the country. The schedule includes a home match with the 2019 National Champion runner-up, No. 2 Wake Forest, and several other elite tennis teams from around the country.
"It's our goal here to put together one of the most difficult schedules in the country so we can not only push our players to grow in their games, but to also prepare us for going deep into the NCAA tournament every year," Hill said.
Fans will have a plethora of opportunities to catch the 2020 Sun Devils in action in part by 12 home matches. The month of March brings five chances alone, including a stretch of four straight at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Arizona State opens the 2020 season at home against GCU on January 16. The Sun Devils and Lopes have a hefty history as cross-town rivals, as ASU's 4-1 victory last season was their 30th all-time win over Grand Canyon.
Aside from facing a talented Pac-12 field including No. 8 USC, No. 11 UCLA and No. 12 Stanford, Hill supplemented their Pac-12 slate with several of the best in collegiate tennis from outside of the conference. ASU welcomes other key national contenders to Tempe - aside from the Demon Deacons - like No. 6 Baylor, while also facing off against No. 3 Ohio State and No. 14 Texas A&M in their territory.
Among key competitions is the Territorial Cup series match scheduled for March 29 at the Whiteman Tennis Center, a chance fans won't want to miss. The Sun Devils have claimed a 2-0 record over the Wildcats since reinstatement, and they look to keep that undefeated streak going with the home crowd support. The match is also senior day for the squad's two seniors in Scottsdale-native Nathan Ponwith and Makey Rakotomalala, who was a part of Hill's first signing class since reinstatement.
