AZ Salute to Seniors…Katy Clausen (MileSplitAZ/April 11, 2020)
TEMPE, Ariz. – Cliff English and the four-time national champion Sun Devil women's triathlon are proud to announce the newest member of their 2020 squad, signing local Arizona product Katy Clausen to next year's squad. Clausen competed in cross country and track at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix while swimming for Cactus Aquatics.
"The coaches and team are amazing and the high-level program was exactly what I wanted for my future with athletics," Clausen said. "The school is amazing and Arizona is my home."
Clausen represents the first local signee for Sun Devil triathlon, marking a huge milestone for the team. The Phoenix-native was named captain of the track and cross country team for two years while earning MVP Cross Country (2018), MVP Distance Track (2017 & 2018) and MVP Freshman at University High School (2016) honors throughout her high school career.
"Katy is a very talented high school swimmer and cross country/track runner at Desert Vista High School," coach Cliff English said. "We are incredibly excited to have our first local student-athlete sign to attend ASU. She comes to us with some triathlon experience and open water swim experience having raced open water national champs. I believe we can really produce her into a top level collegiate-elite triathlete while she pushes her team-mates in the swim and run."
She ran the fourth-fastest 5000 at Desert Vista and was also the highest finisher at Senior State for Cactus Aquatics. Clausen finished third overall in the 400 IM at Senior State, and adds winning the state championship in 2019 in cross country as well as winning the 2018 Gold Race at the Woodbridge Invitational to her impressive resume.
Excelling in the classroom as well, Clausen has been a part of Desert Vista's National Honor Society since 2018 as well as the school's Science National Honors Society since 2019.
