KAILUA KONA, HI – The No. 2 Sun Devil Women's Golf team completed the first round of the 2019 Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club on the Island of Hawaii.
Linn Grant (-1/72) once again led the way for Arizona State, one of three Sun Devils in the Top-25 at the end of the first round. ASU (+3/295) currently sits in sixth place after day one, just a stroke back of a place in the top-five.
TEAM RESULTS
After struggling to find a rhythm early, the Maroon & Gold enjoyed an incredible collective stretch of golf on holes 13 & 14. They recorded a total of seven birdies as a team, including four on the par-five 13th hole. The Sun Devils continued their success on such opportunities, finishing six-under, tied for the lowest score on par-five holes of any team at the Pac-12 Preview. Arizona State's consistent play has them knocking on the door of the Top-5, as they have recorded a tournament-best 58 pars to this point.
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
Experiencing a shotgun start, Arizona State started the day spread out on Holes 6-10. Alessandra Fanali's birdie on 13 was the first of the day for the Maroon & Gold, sparking what would be an incredible run for the team. Fanali was one of four different Sun Devils to birdie 13, as Linn Grant, Raquel Olmos, and Olivia Mehaffey also found success on the hole. The 14th hole was much of the same, as Olmos and Fanli made it back-to-back birdies while Alexandra Forsterling recorded her first of the day. On the 12-18-hole stretch, Linn Grant was sharp, recording four birdies to help her move under-par. The freshman in currently just outside the Top-10, sitting in a tie for 13th. Olivia Mehaffey ended her round positively with three birdies during a four-hole stretch. Both her and Forsterling birdied the fifth hole as their day was coming to a close, giving them added confidence heading into tomorrow.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"We had a bit of an up and down day today," Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. "After a slow start, we started making birdies. Unfortunately, we had a few too many bogies coming down the stretch. The good part is that we have two more days to move up the leaderboard. There are a lot of birdie opportunities out her. We just need to execute."
LOOKING AHEAD
The Sun Devils have plenty of time to make up ground, as they will complete another 18 holes tomorrow. The field will undergo a 10:30 A.M. MST shotgun start, with Arizona State included in a group with No. 1 Stanford, No. 33 Oregon State, and Colorado. Here is where Coach Farr-Kaye's team will begin their round tomorrow morning: Pac-12 Preview Lineup (10:30 A.M. MST):
Linn Grant – Hole 6
Raquel Olmos – Hole 7
Alessandra Fanali – Hole 8
Olivia Mehaffey – Hole 9
