Picking a lineup when you have good depth can be tricky, and the No. 1 Sun Devil men's golf program was Exhibit A this week in Indiana at the Fighting Irish Classic held at Warren Golf Course. Junior Mason Andersen tied for second with a 6-under 207 (67-69-71) while freshman Ryggs Johnston tied for ninth at 2-under 211 (70-71-70) -- and they both played as individuals.
The Sun Devils finished in fourth at 11-over 863 (291-288-284) with senior Chun An Yu (72-72-71) leading the way at 2-over 215.
Johnston played the par-5 holes at 9-under, the best of anyone in the tournament, while Andersen was 4-under on the par-4 holes, second-best.
"Not a lot went right for us this week but I am really excited for Mason (Anderson) and Ryggs (Johnston)," said fourth-year Sun Devil head coach Matt Thurmond. "They represented the team really well. Mason essentially had his best tournament and I think maybe being able to relax and not have to worry about the team score might have helped him. He played awesome all week. Ryggs, another really steady tournament for him. A top-10 finish. He continues to impress and show that he is a guy that can definitely fit in that lineup and help us win. They were both rock solid all week.
"The course was challenging, not extremely hard, but just different for us. We continued to struggle on courses with tighter fairways, high rough, trees and softer conditions. We have not been great on these coastal courses. It was a great tournament as far as learning for us. As much as I want to win, I like this stuff because it gives us a chance to know ourselves better and know our weaknesses and gives us a better idea of what to work on. That is where we are. We are going to regroup and get ready for our final event of the fall season."
Y-NO-ADR?: Senior Alex del Rey -- who won his first two collegiate tournaments this fall already -- competed in the Spanish Open last weekend and missed the Fighting Irish Classic.
