Mason Andersen Leads Men's Golf After First Round in Florida

Junior Mason Andersen continued his solid play from two weeks ago at the Fighting Irish Classic in Florida in the opening round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational held at Isleworth Golf & Country Club (par-72/7,544 yards).

Andersen shot a 3-under 69 with four birdies and is tied for fifth just two shots off Finigan Tilly (Cal) and Jack Trent (UNLV), who both shot 5-under 67. He is one of only four players in the 75-player field to be at 2-under or better on the par-4 holes after the first round. ASU is tied for ninth as Andersen was the only Sun Devil under par. Cameron Sisk is tied for 19th shooting even-par 72.

Andersen is now at 13-under in seven rounds at the Tavistock after finished tied for eighth at 5-under 211 in 2018 (70-74-67) and 2017 (69-71-71).

THE COURSE: Located among the renowned Butler Chain of Lakes in Central Florida, Isleworth Golf & Country Club is home to one of the longest and toughest courses in the state. Isleworth's magnificent greens, fairways and lakes are a sight to behold but beyond their beauty lies a golf challenge unlike any other. From its back tees, known as the Tiger Tees, the par-72 Isleworth measures 7,544 yards with a slope of 142 and a rating of 77.5. Originally designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay with a re-design by Steve Smyers in 2003, Isleworth's course demands precise drives and accurate short game shots.

LAST YEAR AT TAVISTOCK: ASU posted its best round of the 2018 Tavistock Invitational with a 10-under 278 on Tuesday to finish tied for second behind Vanderbilt at Isleworth Country Club in Windermere, Fla. ASU finished the fall season with a head-to-head record of 44-6-1 as it posted three second-place and one fourth-place finish. Mason Andersen (70-74-67) climbed nine spots to finish tied for eighth after shooting 5-under 67. Andersen, completed the final round clean with five birdies while Vanderbilt's Will Gordon won the tournament after finishing 16-under 200.

YEAR PRIOR AT TAVISTOCK (FALL OF 2017): Freshman and Chandler, Ariz., product Mason Andersen  finished strong for @SunDevilMGolf at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational at the Isleworth Country Club in Windermere, Fla. Andersen shot a 5-under 211 (69-71-71) and finished fifth, just six shots back of winner Dylan Meyer of Illinois who shot an 11-under 205 (67-66-72).. In the first round, Andersen was at 2-over through his first five holes then birdied two holes, posted par and then opened his back nine with an eagle on the par-4, 409-yard No. 10. His second round he posted five birdies, while in the third round he had three birdies in his first eight holes. He was one of just two golfers in the 90-man field to shoot 5-under on the par-4 holes and had 13 birdies, tied for fifth on the weekend.
