HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Polynesian Football Hall of Fame announced Thursday that former Sun Devil offensive lineman David Dixon is one of 10 finalists on the ballot for induction into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020.
The finalists were selected from a field of over 100 nominees by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, which includes former NFL player and inaugural Inductee Jack Thompson (Chairman), coaches Ron McBride and Dick Vermeil, past former NFL offensive lineman and inaugural inductee Olin Kreutz, former NFL Player and Class of 2015 inductee Ray Schoenke, ESPN sportscaster Neil Everett, NFL Network writer Steve Wyche, Honolulu sportscaster Robert Kekaula and Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Mawae.
Dixon is no stranger to the elite list as the former Sun Devil found himself as a finalist for the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame back in 2018 as well.
A Papakura, New Zealand native, Dixon was a member of the Sun Devils' defensive line in 1990 and 1991 before he went on to have an 11-year playing career on the other side of the ball in the NFL. At the time, Dixon was just the second player of Maori descent to play professional American football.
He played 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and made 134 starts, all at right guard. He appeared in 11 playoff games as a Viking, including the 1998 and 2000 NFC Championship games.
Prior to his shift to American football, Dixon made a name for himself as a rugby player. He represented New Zealand in rugby in 1985, and received a Maori Sport Award in 2017, which is given to those of Maori descent for their contributions to sports.
"Special thanks to our outstanding Selection Committee, who has once again put forward an outstanding group of Finalists for the Class of 2020," Thompson said. "This is quite a challenge because there are so many great Polynesian football players, coaches and contributors."
The Selection Committee and all living Polynesian Football Hall of Fame inductees will vote in the coming weeks to select the individuals who will be inducted as the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020.
"On behalf of our Board of Directors, we congratulate the Class of 2020 Finalists," Polynesian Football Hall of Fame chairman, co-founder and inductee Jesse Sapolu said, "Each of the finalists has made a significant impact on our community and the game of football."
Four inductees will be announced on October 23, 2019. They will be honored during the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend and during the Polynesian Bowl on Jan. 17 and 18, 2020.
