Soccer Falls to No. 16 UCLA

Soccer Falls to No. 16 UCLASoccer Falls to No. 16 UCLA
TEMPE, Ariz.—Sophomore forward Marleen Schimmer tallied a goal in her third-consecutive match, but it was not enough, as the Arizona State soccer team (6-4-2, 0-2-1) fell, 4-1, to No. 16 UCLA Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

The Bruins wasted no time in getting things started, netting the game's first goal in the second minute of play. Following a Bruin corner kick, midfielder Viviana Villacorta corralled a deflected ball near the top of the box and fired it in to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

UCLA would go on to add a second goal in the eighth minute, and another in 18th, to take a 3-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Looking to regroup in the second half, the Sun Devil defense would continue to feel the UCLA pressure as the Bruins would find their fourth goal of the match in the 49th minute of play.

The Sun Devils would respond, however, In the 54th minute when Schimmer tallied her sixth-goal of the season with a strike from distance that pulled the score to 4-1. The goal would continue ASU's streak of scoring at least one goal in every match this season, and mark the 13th-straight game for the Sun Devil offense to find the back of the net, dating back to last season.

With neither team able to break through again in the final 36 minutes of play, the game would conclude with the 16th- ranked Bruins on top.

The Sun Devils will hit the road for the first time in Pac-12 play this week, and be back in action on Thursday when the team travels to Seattle to take on Washington. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT, with the Pac-12 Network set to broadcast the match. A Word With Winkworth…
On the team's performance in the match:
"First, I want to credit UCLA, we were beaten by a better team today. They are a very talented team and some class individuals. I also want to credit the UCLA staff, they started the game in a completely different system that they have not started in the previous 11 games. They threw something we were not expecting at us and we did not handle it well. I was a little disappointed with the way that we started the game from a passion standpoint. That is something we really don't want to question, but I was disappointed with our ability to get stuck in in the first half. I thought we responded really well in the second half in that respect and gave as much as we got in the final 45 minutes. I do not want to be playing second halves for pride, I want to be playing for wins, so we need to start games a lot better than we did today."

Match Notes…
  • The Sun Devils have scored a goal in 13 straight matches, dating back to the final game of the 2018 season.
  • With her goal in today's match, Marleen Schimmer has now scored six goals and has officially exceeded her goal-scoring production from a year ago. In her two years as a Sun Devil, Schimmer has scored 11 goals and nine more goals in her career to crack the ASU's top-10 career-goals scoring list.
