TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Wrestling head coach Zeke Jones announces his decision to officially redshirt four members of the team this season.
All-American Tanner Hall, Pac-12 champion Anthony Valencia, 2018 Pac-12 championship team member Cade Belshay, and five-time New York state champion Jacori Teemer are redshirting this season and will be eligible to officially compete for the Sun Devils in 2019-20.
Hall, a member of Barrett Honors College, would've exhausted his eligibility this season, competing as a true freshman in 2015-16 and for the past three years, and will return with one final year next season. He won the Pac-12 heavyweight championship as a sophomore (2017) and upset Duke's No. 4 Jacob Kasper and Virginia Tech's No. 3 Ty Walz at NCAA championships that year to earn All-America status (3rd place). Competing unattached, he won his second career Midlands title in December 2018.
Teemer was the No. 1 recruit in the United States at 126 lbs. and was a five-time high school state champion and national champion. He won his first state title as an eighth grader in New York at the 99-pound weight class. Part of the 2017 Cadet World Team, placing as a bronze medalist in freestyle, Teemer was the No. 4 pound-for-pound recruit in the U.S., according to FloWrestling.
Valencia has won two Pac-12 Championships (2017, 2018), earning automatic qualifications to NCAA Championships. A year ago, he won the championship with two pins and during his first campaign, he had two of the Sun Devils' top-5 fastest pins of the season. In 2016, he qualified for the USA Wrestling World Team Trials.
Belshay competed in 2017-18 as a true freshman and earned the 197-pound spot at Pac-12 Championships. A member of Barrett Honors College, he was named one of two Academic Wrestlers of the Year at the team's annual banquet. He also competed at Junior World Team Trials in Rochester, Minn. in May 2018.
