TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil soccer team welcomed another talented player to the 2019 roster Thursday, this time in forward Lorato Sargeant.
"I am delighted to add Lorato to our squad for the fall," head coach Graham Winkworth said. "'Lo' comes from one of the most successful programs in the United States where she has been extremely well coached gaining top class experience the past four years. With the attacking talent that we lost to graduation, and the youth of our squad we felt it was important to try and add a little experience to the group."
Lorato, a redshirt senior, will arrive in Tempe having logged 1065 minutes during her time in Virginia playing for the Cavaliers. In the most recent season, Lorato appeared in 16 matches for the Hoos, helping to lead the team to the third round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
"Last season we took a graduate transfer into the squad in Casey Martinez and it was a huge success," Winkworth added. "We are hopeful that Lo can provide us the hard work and attacking skills to help continue our growth as a program. She possesses a solid first touch and great pace. She also has the ability to play with her back to goal, but her speed will keep many back lines true. We also like that she is equally comfortable playing out wide or through the middle. Lorato had many options available to her from a variety of top schools. What impressed me was how much desire she has shown in wanting to be a Sun Devil and get this part of her playing career going. She is very hungry to succeed."
The addition of Sargeant will help strengthen a Sun Devil attack that will welcome back Nicole Douglas (the 2018 team leader in goals) and Marleen Schimmer, as well as attacking midfield players Eva Van Deursen and Alexia Delgado.
