Tucson, Ariz. -- Arizona State soccer scores three unanswered goals and improve to 5-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine Friday afternoon at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson.
The game did not start the way the Sun Devils had hoped, as the Anteaters were able to strike for their first goal of the match in just the 13th minute of play, forcing the ASU offense to adjust and find their footing.
Just 11 minutes later, ASU sophomore Eva Van Deursen would tie things up with an opportunistic strike in the box, making it a 1-1 game at the first water break of the half.
Seven minutes later, fellow sophomore Marleen Schimmer would put the Sun Devils up for good with an incredible run that ended with a powerful strike from point blank range, giving ASU a 2-1 advantage with just 14 minutes remaining in the half.
Coming out of the break, the Sun Devils seemed to settle in, wearing down the Anteater defense until the 88th minute when Nicole Douglas laced a shot through to push the score to the final, 3-1.
Statistically, Arizona State dominated in the attack, outshooting the Anteaters, 19-3, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. On the defensive end, freshman Giulia Cascapera notched her fourth win in goal, thanks to a team effort on defense that kept her from having to make a single save in the win.
The Sun Devils will be back in action this Sunday, returning home to host Oklahoma at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Kickoff in Sunday's contest is set for 5:00 p.m. PT, with the Pac-12 Network set to broadcast the game. A Word With Winkworth...
On the 5-0 start to the season;
"It has been nice scoring goals. We have got to do better in not conceding goals, but it is nice to be 5-0. Today I was a little disappointed in our performance. It is exciting that we are winning matches, but as we are improving, the team has very high standards and I don't think we met them today."
On conceding the early goal;
"I would rathe conceded an early goal than a late goal because we have time to correct the problem. It was disappointing to find ourselves down early, but with the way we play we are going to make some mistakes. I was happy with the way we responded and that we were able to come back and score some goals."
On Van Deursen's effort that tied the game early in the first half;
"You have got to put yourself in a position to score and know that these things happen. We have talked about having Eva get into the box a little bit more this season and she has managed to do that so far this year. I am really pleased and really happy for her."
On Marleen Schimmer's outing, including the game winning strike;
"I was proud of Schimmy being able to keep her discipline. She had been fouled on the edge of the box and unfortunately the decision went against her, and she got booked for what looked to have been a fair challenge. But for her to keep her discipline in a situation like that, I was really proud of her. And then she showed incredible strength on her goal. I thought it looked close to being a foul, but she was able to stay on her feet, which I give her a lot of credit for, and she went on and calmly put the ball in the back of the net. All in all I was really proud of her performance tonight.
On the defensive mentality of the team;
"I have been really proud of our effort defensively. It is weird being here after we win a game 3-1 and I am sitting here disappointed. We limited them to three total shots, only one of those was on frame. If you have that in every game you are going to win a lot of matches. Overall I am pretty happy with that."
On the matchup against Oklahoma at home on Sunday;
"We are looking forward to having a great crowd out on Sunday night. I am really proud of the efforts that our supporters have put in so far this season. I just hope we put in a better performance on Sunday than we did today for our home crowd. They deserve it because they have been showing up in big numbers, but I also have a lot of trust in our girls and I have no doubt in my mind that we will have a response for today's performance. We are looking forward to putting in a good one on Sunday night and hopefully continuing what has been a fantastic start to the season."
