ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Sun Devil women's tennis team got their fall season started this weekend at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor.

DAY ONE

Arizona State's fall season got off to a solid start Friday when the two Sun Devil pairings swept in doubles, and a couple of Devils knocked off ranked opponents in singles play.

The biggest upset of the day came at the hands of Sun Devil senior Sammi Hampton. Matching up against No. 26 Chiara Lommer of Michigan, Hampton took down the Wolverine senior in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

No. 75 Ilze Hattingh then downed another ranked opponent from Michigan in No. 47 Giulia Pairone, 6-2, 6-3.

"They both played well against really quality opponents," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "Sammi did a fantastic job of composing herself and fighting back from 1-3 down in the third set to win the match, and Ilze competed hard and did a really nice job of closing her match in straight sets."

Later in the day in doubles play, a pair of seniors played together in Hattingh and Savannah Slaysman, and a familiar duo in Hampton/Alicea took the court together.

Both tandems defeated their Michigan State opponents fairly handily with Hattingh/Slaysman taking the match 6-2, and Hampton/Alicea winning 6-3.

The Sun Devils return to the courts in Ann Arbor, Michigan Saturday morning to take on women from Notre Dame and Western Michigan.

DAY TWO

The second day in Ann Arbor saw more of the same from Sammi Hampton and Ilze Hattigh as the two upended women from Notre Dame in straight-sets to bring their weekend win total to two apiece.

"Sammi played a really complete match with a lot of confidence and never let up to convincingly beat another ranked opponent," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "Ilze did a great job of staying composed after being down 2-5 in the first. She regained control and really dominated the match."

No. 75 Hattingh defeated Page Freeman 7-5, 6-1 while Hampton grabbed another ranked win over No. 116 Cameron Corse, 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Savannah Slaysman joined her teammates in the win column as she came back to take down Bess Waldram 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

"Savannah competed well today and showed a lot of resiliency after dropping the first set and being deadlocked in the second to take over the match and control the third," Langley said.

The Devils played pairings from Western Michigan in doubles and handled their Bronco opponents. Hattingh/Slaysman and Hampton/Alicea both won 6-3 to grab their second wins of the weekend.

DAY THREE

Arizona State closed out their fall opener in Michigan by grabbing a singles win and a doubles win.

Senior Savannah Slaysman earned the Sun Devils' sole victory Sunday when she handled Yale's Jessie Gong, 6-3, 6-4.

The other two seniors who took the court in singles Sunday dropped their first matches of the fall as No. 75 Ilze Hattingh couldn't finish the upset of No. 52 Samantha Martinelli, and Sammi Hampton came up short against Chelsea Kung.

The Devils mixed up the doubles pairings and put two seniors together in Hattingh/Hampton and paired Samantha Alicea with Slaysman. The senior parternship proved fruitful as they defeated Lorenzini/Craciun, 6-3.

"Overall it was a great weekend for the girls," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "To get back into the rhythm of competing and dealing with pressure was good for us. They did a good job of competing and coming away with positive results, including three nationally ranked wins."

With the conclusion of the Wolverine Invitational, the Devils come back west ro compete in the Cal Invitational next weekend in Berkeley.
