BEIJING, China – The Sun Devils controlled their own destiny entering Tuesday afternoon's match-up with KRS-ORG, and they took care of business with a 3-1 victory to advance to the Fu Xing Cup Championship game on Wednesday at AoZhong Ice Sports Club.
Three different players scored, including junior forward Johnny Walker who netted his fourth goal in as many games to help outshoot ORG, 53-14.
"I'm proud of our guys for accepting the challenge presented before them, knowing they had to win to advance to tomorrow's championship," said head coach Greg Powers. "We continue to out chance and outshoot our opponents, and we've given ourselves a shot at winning this tournament which was our goal coming in.
In the four round robin games, the Sun Devils managed to outshoot their opponents 210-94 through their four games and are averaging just over 52 shots per game.
For the first time in the tournament, ASU did not score first as KRS-ORG found the back of the net first on an odd-man rush the other way.
After being held scoreless in the first period, the Sun Devils rallied for two goals in less than two minutes in the second to take their first lead and would never look back with three unanswered goals.
Goals came from Walker, junior forward Willie Knierim and senior forward Brett Gruber.
ASU will play the winner of Yermak and KRS, who played in the 7 p.m. XJT game on Tuesday night. The championship game is set for 6 p.m. XJT / 3 a.m. AZ on Wednesday.
