TEMPE, Ariz. – Seven different players scored goals as the Arizona State soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating Tennessee Tech, 7-1, on Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
It was the eighth time in program history that the team scored six-or-more goals in a single match, and the second straight seven goal performance for the maroon and gold.
The Sun Devils got off to a fast start, finding the back of the net in the 5th minute thanks to sophomore Nicole Douglas who scored her fourth goal of the season. It took ASU only six minutes to double their lead as senior Adriana Orozco slotted a ball in the lower corner of the frame, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Just minutes later, the Sun Devils converted on their third goal of the half, as Marleen Schimmer fired in a screamer from 25-yards out to extend ASU's lead to 3-0 in the 23rd minute.
The Golden Eagles would get a goal back shortly there after, but with 30 seconds remaining in the half, freshman midfielder Dai Williams scored on a magnificent volley to push the ASU lead to 4-1 heading into the break.
Kicking off the second half on a high note, Lieske Carleer would play a ball through to Alexia Delgado who would then square it to a wide-open Eva Van Deursen to tap-in the Sun Devils' fifth goal of the match. Lorato Sargeant and freshman Makenzie Harvey would both add goals of their own in the final minutes of the match to give ASU their second straight, 7-1, home-victory.
Anchoring the ASU defense, goalkeeper Sydney Day made her 2019 debut in Friday's win. After allowing a goal in the 24th minute, Day would go on to record three saves to card her first win this season.
The Sun Devils will be back in action Sunday afternoon, when the team hosts Weber State in their final match of the 2019 Sun Devil Desert Classic. Kickoff in Sunday's game is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on TheSunDevils.com. A WORD WITH THE TEAM...
Head Coach Graham Winkworth on the team's back-to-back record setting offensive performances;
"Right now I am seeing a lot of energy. I want to start off by thanking the 942 crew and all of the supporters who came out again this week. I know it was the game of the week, and I am hopeful that they will continue to make it out here whether it is the game of the week or not, and that we continue to see such a great crowds. I am really thankful for that. From the team, the second half was a joy to watch. I thought we were okay in the first half, but in the second half, not only were the players who started the game playing extremely well, we also didn't see a drop off when we made some changes. I was really proud of that. Some of the ladies who didn't make it into the game were also providing some great energy from our sideline. Our energy was phenomenal today."
Winkworth on where he sees his team right now;
"We are in a good spot and we are creating a lot of goal scoring chances and being very clinical in front of goal, but we haven't gotten a clean-sheet yet this season and we have played three games. We are ahead of where we were this time last year. This time last year, tomorrow, we lost 2-1 to New Hampshire on our own pitch. I think we have come a long way since then, and I am really happy with where we are at, but we have just got to be better in the little areas that have led to us conceding goals. Those are the things that will cost us later in the season."
Van Duersen on the development of the offense, and the ability to score from a number of areas on the pitch;
"We have been working on it for two years and now it is paying off. We are scoring from all over the pitch and it is just fantastic. It is so fun to play the way we have been playing in our first three games."
