TEMPE – New men's and women's cross country coach Cory Leslie announced Arizona State's 2019 cross country schedule Monday that includes six meets across the three month season, and culminates with the NCAA Cross Country Championships held in Terre Haute, Indiana on Nov. 23.
"I'm excited about this year's schedule," coach Cory Leslie said. "We're going to some meets we've never been to before and challenging ourselves on some new courses in some new places.
"I think that's going to give our kids, especially the younger men and women, a good opportunity to experience some competition that will bode well once championship season is finally here," Leslie said.
While the Devils have six meets on the upcoming campaign, the Sun Devils will only run in three regular season races.
ASU decided to forgo the trip to Flagstaff last season, ending a participation streak of 12 years at the George Kyte Invitational. But the 2019 season will open with return trip to Buffalo Park as the Sun Devils kick off the season against some in-state competition at 7,000 feet up.
The Devils will swap mountain views for ocean breezes two weeks later as they head to the California coast for the San Diego Invitational.
After running in Southern California, ASU will have plenty of downtime as they prepare for their third and final regular season meet scheduled for Oct. 19 down in College Station, Texas. The Arturo Barrios Invitational has been a battleground for NCAA contenders in recent years and the Devils will throw their hats into a ring of what is projected to be another clash of top-programs in the Lone Star State.
ASU's postseason campaigns will get going two weeks later in Corvallis, Oregon, as Oregon State hosts the Men's and Women's Pac-12 Cross Country Championships. The conference meet will be the first time the Sun Devils can pick up two of six total Territorial Cup Series points on in-state rival Arizona.
Two weeks later, Leslie's Devils will head back to the Pacific Northwest, this time for the NCAA West Regional Championships in Colfax, Washington. While just the top-two finishing teams on the men's and women's sides at the Regional Championships are guaranteed spots at the NCAA Championships, the West has consistently procured at least three more at-large bids for both genders in each of the last six seasons.
Should the Devils earn a starting box for the National Championships, ASU will pack up one more time and head east to Terre Haute, Indiana, to compete for national titles on Nov. 23.
