TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State senior Cohl Cabral has been named to the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, an honor given annually to the nation's most outstanding center.
The Rimington Trophy is named in honor of Dave Rimington, a two-time consensus all-American with Nebraska and College Football Hall of Fame Inductee. Rimington is the only player to ever win the Outland Trophy twice, an award given to the country's top offensive or defensive lineman.
Cabral started all 13 games for the Sun Devils last season at center, and was widely respected as one of the best in all of college football. One of just 15 Power Five centers to not allow a sack last season, Cabral was instrumental in helping pave the way for a record-breaking season from Sun Devil running back Eno Benjamin, while also anchoring a line that allowed just 16 sacks all season – good for the third-fewest allowed by an ASU offensive line in program history.
Cabral is one of 80 players to be nominated for the award, along with 10 others from the PAC-12, the most of any Power Five conference. Joining Cabral on the preseason list were Josh McCauley (Arizona), Michael Saffell (Cal), Tim Lynott Jr. (Colorado), Jake Hanson (Oregon), Drew Dalman (Stanford), Boss Tagaloa (UCLA), Brett Neilon (USC), Nick Harris (washington) and Frederick Mauigoa (Washington State).
The center with the most first team votes will be determined the winner. If there is a tie with first team votes, then the center with the most second team votes will win. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a majority vote from the Rimington Trophy committee. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, January 18, 2020.
