PHOENIX – The Sun Devil Baseball team couldn't seem to get anything going in an 18-3 loss to top-ranked UCLA on Saturday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium as ASU dropped the series to the Bruins.
Alika Williams was the lone bright spot of the day, knocking a three-run homer in the eighth inning to help the Sun Devils stave off the shutout. Arizona State gave up 22 hits and seven home runs to the Bruins, who had every facet of the game clicking on all cylinders.
Garrett Mitchell started the game for UCLA by ripping a double to right center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mitchell scored in the next at-bat on a fly out to give the Bruins an early 1-0 lead.
After adding a run each in the second and third inning, UCLA loaded the bases with two outs and then hit a grand slam to left center field to blow up to a 7-0 lead.
The contest snowballed from there before Williams' round-tripper in the bottom of the eighth.
Outfielder Myles Denson pitched in relief in the ninth inning for the first time in his career and handed the Bruins their only scoreless inning of the game while also picking up his first career strikeout.
Arizona State will look to avoid the sweep in the final game of the series against UCLA tomorrow at 2 p.m. PST. The game will be broadcasted live on Pac-12 Networks and NBC Sports 1060 AM KDUS.
