The second-seeded Arizona State University men's golf team -- also ranked second by both Golfweek and Golfstat -- shot an 8-over 296 on Saturday morning in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Championships held at the challenging and tough Blessings Golf Club (7,550 yards/par-72) in Fayetteville. After a 76.98 scoring average for the complete first round, Saturday's morning wave was 74.62.
Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Cameron Sisk had ASU's best round of the day with a 1-over 73 that included three birdies. On Friday he carded a 4-over 76 after a tough start that had him at 4-over through his first six holes, but he then made par on the next seven holes and birdied two more before a double bogey on his final hole. Sisk had no birdies and was 4-over through first 13 holes, but posted six birdies in his next 20 holes.
Junior Chun An Yu shot a 2-over 74 and is at 1-under 143. He is in eighth, five shots back of leader Austin Eckenroat of Oklahoma State (69-69) who is at 6-under 138. Yu had six first-round birdies, as his 3-under 69 included three birdies on par-5 holes on Friday.
Chun An Yu is one of only eight of the 156 players are under par through two rounds. ASU shot 14-over 302 and was tied for tenth and just four shots back of the top eight spot needed after Monday to advance to match play.
ASU will tee Sunday beginning at 8:07 a.m. with Vanderbilt and Clemson, as the field is trimmed to 15 teams and top nine individuals not on those teams after Sunday's third round.
The top eight teams after Monday advance to match play starting Tuesday with quarterfinals and semifinal action and the championship on Wednesday.
NCAA INDIVIDUAL NOTE: 2019 Pac-12 Coach of the Year Matt Thurmond coached James Lepp to the 2005 NCAA individual title, while also tutoring Cheng-Tsuung Pan (2015) and Nick Taylor (2008) to second-place NCAA finishes during his 15-year Washington tenure.
PING ALL-REGION: Division I PING All-Region honorees were announced by the GCAA on Saturday. Five Sun Devils (Mason Andersen, Alex del Rey, Cameron Sisk, Blake Wagoner and Chun An Yu) earned West honors.
DON'T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED: Thirty teams earned the right to go to Arkansas, but it isn't easy in the stressful regional world. Golfstat top-30 teams that didn't qualify for Arkansas were Texas Tech (15), NC State (24), Alabama (28) and UCLA (29). Golfweek's highest three ranked teams not earning the trip were Texas Tech (18), Florida State (25) and UCLA (26).
