TEMPE, Ariz. – As announced by the NCAA Wednesday, Arizona State University recorded a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) average of 991 over a four-year period (2014-15 to 2017-18). This is the third year in a row ASU averaged a 990-plus and the third consecutive year with the second-highest score in the Pac-12.

Among multiyear rates, wrestling, football and men's track recorded all-time highs with 976, 980 and 983, respectively. Many teams kept their streaks alive for consecutive years with a perfect score. Women's golf and gymnastics have both done it three years in a row, while men's golf extended their streak to five and volleyball extended it to six. For men's tennis and women's water polo, they both earned 1000 for the first time. Women's basketball was another perfect team, their second time in the last three years doing so.
Within the Pac-12, 10 teams were in first place for their APR multiyear averages: men's golf, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, volleyball and water polo.
Eight Sun Devil teams – Women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, gymnastics, men's tennis, women's tennis, volleyball and water polo – earned a place in the top-10 percent as announced last week, all recording a perfect 1000. "As Sun Devil Athletics continues to implement a strategic plan that emphasizes championship performance that leads to championship lives, our academic success is a real time measure of our progress," Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief of Staff Jean Boyd said. "Once again, we are ranked at the top of the academically and athletically prestigious Pac-12 (second place) for our department-wide average for NCAA APR, which measures eligibility and retention of our student-athletes. We applaud the team effort led by Andrea Lore and her dynamic academic support staff, university faculty, our coaches and student-athletes."
Since the beginning of APR measurement in 2003-04, ASU's average for all sports has increased from 937.
APR tracks the academic progress of each student-athlete, including eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation, and provides a clear picture of the current academic culture for each sport as well as department-wide. In 2014, the NCAA Board of Directors implemented a cut score of 930, below which teams will be penalized with loss of postseason competition.

"We are proud to once again claim second in the Pac-12 conference for our overall NCAA multiyear Academic Progress Rate," Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson said. "Our high APR, one of our primary academic performance metrics, is attributable to the hard work led by our Office of Student-Athlete Development as well as by our coaches, staff, faculty and sport administrators. Our goal as a department is to give Sun Devil student-athletes the greatest chance to excel athletically and academically."Our student-athletes work to achieve #excellence, both in the classroom and in competition.
