SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Men's Tennis junior Nathan Ponwith was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference second team as announced by the Pac-12 earlier this week. The honor is the first of the transfer's career after anchoring court one for the Sun Devils against some of the top teams in the country in 2019.
The Scottsdale-native kicked of his Sun Devil career with three-straight victories over opponents from then-No. 14 TCU, No. 16 Illinois and No. 3 Mississippi State. Ponwith faced off against 13 opponents ranked in the top-50 by the ITA throughout the course of the season, including the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 10 players in Division I tennis.
The junior played a huge role in the Sun Devils' upset over No. 13 Michigan, representing the first win over a top-25 opponent for the squad since reinstatement last season. Ponwith went to battle with No. 37 Mattias Siimar, dropping his first set in a tiebreak 7-6.
He rebounded to take his second set by a commanding 6-1 and then transferred the momentum to a 6-4 third set win to clinch the match for ASU. Ponwith also clinched ASU victories over Incarnate Word, No. 42 Oregon and Washington.
While the Sun Devils as a team are finished with collegiate action in 2019, No. 17 Ponwith/Dominik Kellovsky will jet to Orlando to take part in the 2019 NCAA Doubles National Championship.
The pair were one of 32 tandems selection to take part in the championships conducted May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship. Fans can keep up with the action all postseason-long by following @SunDevilMTennis on Twitter.
