SEATTLE – In a game that featured six ties and six different lead changes, it was the final changed that proved to be the undoing for Sun Devil Baseball as Washington walked it off in the 12thinning on a sac fly for a 10-9 victory on Saturday in Seattle.
The Sun Devils homered four times, including two from Lyle Lin, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the eight innings and knocked a pair of dingers and an RBI double in extra innings as he went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. It was Lin's first multi-homer game of his rallied ASU from a three-run deficit in the eighth with a two-run shot before going yard again for the go-ahead run in the 12thinning, unfortunately undone by a pair of Husky runs in the bottom half of the frame to earn the walk-off victory.
Spencer Torkelson added his 15thhome run of the season as he reached 40 career home runs – tied for seventh in Sun Devil history and moving within 16 of the school record of 56 by Bob Horner, despite being just a sophomore.
Trevor Hauver posted his 10thhomer of the year, going 2-for-7 with two RBIs and a double. Gage Workman and Drew Swift each added multi-hit performances as well. ASU recorded five doubles and four homers in the back-and-forth affair as the offense kept the Sun Devils in contention through the entire 12 innings.
Boyd Vander Kooi showed moments of brilliance with eight strikeouts – one shy of his career-high – while walking just one batter. He allowed five earned runs in 6.2 innings, though a string of softly-hit singles in a 3-3 tie in the seventh resulted in a trio runs to put a damper on the outing.
ASU was up to task in the eighth, however, rallying behind back-to-back homers from Lin and Hauver to square things at 6-6 and send the game to extra innings.
The Sun Devils opened the 10thwith three consecutive doubles on the first three pitches of the inning to take an 8-6 advantage.
The Huskies rallied for two in the bottom half of the frame, mounting a two-out rally to tied the game at 8-8.
Lin's homer in the top of the 12thgave ASU its second lead of extra innings, a 9-8 advantage that ASU was unable to maintain in the bottom half of the frame as UW scored one and loaded the bases with just one out to put the winning run 90 feet away. A Nick Kahle sac fly to deep right field would bring that run across to seal the 10-9 victory for the Huskies.
The Sun Devils will look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be available online through the Washington live stream and over the air waves on NBC Sports Radio 1060 AM.
