LOS ANGELES – School records and regional marks highlighted the Sun Devil track and field team's road trip to the West Coast this weekend where a handful of athletes competed in Long Beach and Azusa, California.
Two Sun Devil records were broken this week. One of the records that fell was set earlier this season, and the other had stood for nearly 50 years until William Paulson bested it at the Bryan Clay Invitational Friday night.
Paulson set the indoor mile mark during his only indoor season in Maroon and Gold, but the senior All-American also had his sights set on Chuck LaBenz' 1,500-meter record that had stood as the school record for nearly a half-century.
Crossing the line in 3:38.35, Paulson became the first Sun Devil in school history to complete a 1,500 in less than 3 minutes and 40 seconds, and bested LaBenz' long-standing record by two seconds.
Jessica Barreira's recent javelin school record that she set back in March fell Friday when Seri Geisler launched the javelin 55.73m/182-10 feet. The throw gave the newcomer the win at the Beach Classic and moved her to No. 3 in the region.
Geisler is the third Sun Devil thrower with a top-three mark in the region, joining the national leader in the shot put Samantha Noennig and NCAA hammer throw leader Beatrice Llano.
Back in Azusa, a few distance Devils had big days in senior John Reniewicki, Fearghal Curtin and Bianca Tinoco.
Tinoco already owns one of the fastest 800-meter marks in the region, but the sophomore went out and ran a top-25 1,500-meter mark at the Bryan Clay Invitational that also put her into the ASU top-10 in the event.
Reniewicki and Curtin also put themselves into the ASU record book in the 10,000 and 5,000-meter runs, respectively. The senior made his 10K debut Wednesday night and completed the 25-lap race in 29:32.52, moving him to fifth in Sun Devil history. Curtin's 13:53.53 placed him on his second top-10 list in his short time as a Devil at No. 7 in history.
Over on the coast at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, sophomore Michael Chadwick also put himself into the record book in the pole vault. He cleared 5.21m/17-1.00 feet on his third and final attempt and finished fifth out in Long Beach. He's now tied at No. 2 on the Pac-12's season-best list just ahead of Sun Devil senior and former Pac-12 champion Matthew Eckles.
The Sun Devils compete closer to home next weekend as they head south to the Desert Heat Classic where they'll get a preview of the facility hosting the Pac-12 Championships in three weeks.
