Berkeley, Calif. – The No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo team (12-11) tied it up going into the third period but couldn't manage to keep the Golden Bears off the board, ultimately falling, 14-9, at No. 4 Cal.
Freshman Lieke Rogge had herself a career day, supplying her first ever hat trick and her eighth multiple score game this season. Sister Bente Rogge also entered the scoresheet with two goals of her own to drive her season total to 42.
Senior Maud Koopman continued to be a force from the offensive end, adding her fourth hat trick of the season while pushing her goal streak to 10 straight games – Koopman is now just four goals away from passing former teammate Alkistis Benekou for third all-time in Sun Devil scoring history.
Koopman ignited a fast start to the match for ASU, connecting on a cross-cage score to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears would follow with two goals of their own to take the early advantage. Senior PJ Allin was quick to answer the goal by Cal as she connected on her 13th goal of the season, nodding things up 2-2.
L. Rogge provided one of the biggest sparks during the course of the second period for the Sun Devils, recording back-to-back goals with one coming at the buzzer to end the second period of play and tie the score at 6-6.
It was a back and forth affair up until the closing minutes in the third period when Cal found themselves up 12-8, heading to the fourth. Koopman drilled the final goal for the Sun Devil offense off of a nice dish from senior teammate Julia Reyes, marking Koopman's 50th goal of the 2019 season and 172nd in a Sun Devil uniform.
Goalie Bridgett Johnston kept the Devils within striking distance with a display of excellent saves throughout the match, finishing the contest with 10 saves.
