LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team battled through the elements, dropping a contest to Liberty by a 14-7 score on a rainy Friday afternoon at Liberty Lacrosse Stadium.
Six different Sun Devils scored a goal and the goalkeepers combined to make 15 saves, but the Flames managed to pull away late to secure the victory. A physical contest developed as the game featured 60 fouls and eight cards.
Arizona State would tally the final two goals of the first half, following that up by scoring the first goal of the second half pulling them as close as two goals. Despite a feisty and unrelenting comeback effort, the Sun Devils would come up short in their first of two games on the East Coast.
After a slow start in an unfamiliar environment, ASU found themselves in an early 3-0 hole. Julia Burns would help settle the attack, as she got the Maroon and Gold on the board with her fifth goal of the season coming with 21:16 left in the first half. She received a pass from the Pac-12's leader in assists Emily Glagolev, who notched her 23rd helper, giving her an assist in nine consecutive games.
Shortly following a Liberty goal, Maria Villanti provided an answer to cut the lead back to three goals. Mallory Martel picked up her second assist of the season on the play. Liberty went on their second 3-0 run of the first half, but the Sun Devils managed to keep their composure and finish the half out strong.
Taylor Carson came through with her 11th goal of the season at the 9:10 mark, with the Liberty lead cut to 7-3. As the Flames pushed their lead back to five with 4:57 left, a different Arizona State team put together a strong finish to the initial 30 minutes.
The first of two goals over the final four minutes came off the stick of Maura Cissel, who registered her first career goal cashing in off a feed from Mallory Martel. Martel turned in her first ever multi-assist performance. Emily Glagolev continued what has been a magnificent run as of late, reaching the 40-point mark with a goal giving her six consecutive multi-point performances. Olivia Hood would earn her second career assist on Glagolev's goal. The Sun Devils would enter halftime leading in shots (18-13), draw controls (9-5), and ground balls (7-6), but trailed Liberty 8-5 on the scoreboard.
Arizona State would carry over the momentum of a strong first half finish into the second half, as Maria Villanti scored for the second time on the afternoon to cut the lead to 8-6 with 26:25. Villanti has picked up her offensive game as of late, recording a goal in six of her last seven games.
Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau entered in the second half and had no trouble getting into a groove, as she denied multiple point-blank shot attempts by the Flames. Bonneau totaled 12 saves in her 30 minutes of action, posting her fourth consecutive double-digit save performance and tenth overall during the 2019 season.
The Sun Devils would get on the board one last time, with Paige McGlothlin scoring in the return to her home state. Kylie Kroeger was outstanding earning possessions for her side, finishing with five draw controls. Arizona State was unable to manufacture anymore offense despite several threatening possession, falling to Liberty 14-7.
"We must be able to re-focus and put this game behind us," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "I think we can build some momentum and gain some confidence with a strong performance in our next game on Sunday."
Arizona State will turn their attention to Sunday's game against Presbyterian, as they travel to Clinton, South Carolina. A reminder that the game was moved up one hour from what it was originally scheduled because of expected weather in the area, with the contest now taking place at 9 a.m. MST/12 p.m. ET. In the matchup between the two teams a year ago, Arizona State set school records in both goals scored and margin of victory in a 23-5 win in Tempe.
