TEMPE, Ariz. – There's no shortage to watch Sun Devil men's tennis at home this week as the squad will take on Delaware, Washington, Oregon and GCU at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
"We always love being home and playing in front of our home crowd," coach Matt Hill said. "Having four matches in one week is exciting and it's a big week for us for sure."
The home stand kicks off with a midweek morning matchup against Delaware, with first serve set for 8:30 a.m. MST Tuesday. The Blue Hens (12-6) have yet to play a Pac-12 foe this season, but have taken on a ranked opponent in their 6-1 loss against then-No. 23 Penn.
Delaware travels to Arizona for a double-header against Arizona Christian and Ottawa on Monday and then have another double-header with the Sun Devils and Grand Canyon on Tuesday.
"It's going to be a lot of tough battles this week, but the guys are looking good, they feel ready and they seem ready," Hill said. "This week is going to be a fun challenge."
After the midweek, the Sun Devils continue conference play with Oregon on Friday at 5 p.m. MST. ASU took care of business in Eugene last time around to the tune of a 4-1 victory over the Ducks.
This time around Oregon is off to a 13-3 record, suffering losses to Stanford (4-0), Stanta Barbara (4-3) and Utah (4-2). Oregon returns their No. 1 player Thomas Laurent who recently set the Oregon all-time season wins record. Aside from Laurent, the Ducks return two more starters from 2018.
"We know Thomas is one of the best players in college tennis, and he's got another team with good freshmen behind him," Hill said. "Every match in the Pac-12 is brutal. There are no off days this year."
Set for a double-header on Sunday, the Sun Devils first take on the Huskies at 12 p.m. MST. Washington holds a 6-11, taking on a couple familiar foes in Michigan (L, 5-2), Indiana (L, 4-0), San Diego (L, 4-2) and Pepperdine (L, 4-0). The Sun Devils went 4-0 in matchups this season against those opponents.
"Washington has a young team this year, but they're always super competitive," Hill said. "They have good, consistent depth all though out the lineup and while they may not have gotten the results they wanted this year, we know how dangerous they are."
ASU came out on top in the matchup last season 4-3 to cap off a successful Pacific Northwest road trip.
For their final match of the week, the Sun Devils welcome the Lopes to Tempe looking to secure their 30th win over Grand Canyon in program history, currently holding a 29-0 record. The two programs have not faced off this decade, and have not played each other since at least before the 2001-02 season.
"They have a very good team because he has done a very good job here and that isn't easy," Hill said. "They've played some tough matches against some really good teams."
