STANFORD, Calif. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team came up short in a battle with No. 20 Stanford on Friday evening at Maloney Field in Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

Emily Glagolev continued her productive month of March, finishing with a goal and two assists (three points) to lead the offensive unit. Paige McGlothlin put together her third career multi-goal performance, as the freshman reached the double-digit goal plateau.

A shorthanded Arizona State side put forth great effort despite the challenging circumstances. The team continues to show resiliency, as they compete hard every game while overcoming adversity. The defensive unit showed flashes of brilliance, holding Stanford scoreless for a 12-minute stretch and three separate nine-minute stretches, but a second half stretch in which the Cardinal scored five goals in five minutes put the game out of reach. The Cardinal captured their eighth win of the season in a 14-5 victory.

"We had stretches tonight where I was proud of the defensive effort," Coach Martinez Connor stated. "When you have defenders playing 90% of the game, it wears on them and Stanford took advantage of that."

A scoreless tie over the first eight minutes of the game was broken by Maria Villanti, whose fourth goal of the season with 21:33 remaining in the first half put the Sun Devils in front 1-0.

Stanford answered with five consecutive goals, taking a 5-1 lead with 14:35 remaining in the first. At that point, Arizona State goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau settled in, making several critical stops to keep the Cardinal from pulling away. Stanford would be held scoreless for a 12-minute stretch, thanks to a motivated Sun Devil defense and tremendous goaltending.

Emily Glagolev snapped ASU's own scoring drought, as she found the back of the net for the 13th time this season to cut the lead to 5-2 with 8:25 left in the opening half. The sophomore has at least one point in all ten games so far this season, compiling 17 points over her last five games. In a near carbon copy of the game in Tempe, the Sun Devils once again entered halftime facing a manageable 6-2 deficit against a Top-25 Stanford squad.

Initially, the halftime adjustments paid off as ASU scored the first goal of the final half. Paige McGlothlin, who entered Friday as one of only five Pac-12 freshmen to have recorded at least 12 points, added to that total with an excellent offensive effort. She received an excellent feed from Taylor Carson and had no trouble finding the back of the net to cut the lead to 6-3 with only two minutes elapsed in the second. For Carson, it was her first assist of the season.

"For the most part, I was pleased with the way the attack created opportunities," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "There were some goals left on the field, which we have to correct before Sunday."

The Maroon and Gold began the second half on the same page, relying on team defense and constant communication. Stanford experienced their second scoring drought of over nine minutes, as they were unable to score until just under seven minutes into the second half.

Stanford began to click offensively after the long scoreless streak, putting the game out of reach with five goals over the next five minutes. The Sun Devils refused to quit, however, as they controlled more draws then the Cardinal over the final 30 minutes after struggling in the category in the first half.

Arizona State's offensive unit showed signs of life midway through the second half, with freshman Kaylon Buckner burying her seventh goal of the season to trim the lead to 11-4 with 17:19 left in the game. The goal was assisted by Emily Glagolev, her second assist of the evening, giving her five multi-assist performances in 2019.

Three more Stanford goals, the last of which coming with 8:26 remaining, pushed the lead out to 10. The Sun Devils were able to turn up the intensity over the final eight minutes, holding the Cardinal out of the scoring column for the rest of the game. Instead, Arizona State would score the last goal of the game. A terrific fake by Emily Glagolev on a free-position attempt drew the defenses' attention, leading to the second goal of the game by Paige McGlothlin with 1:26 left in the game. Stanford ran the remaining time off the clock in their final possession, earning a 14-5 victory.

"It is important for our team to re-group and re-focus, as we have a tough opponent on Sunday," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned.

The Sun Devils face yet another familiar foe, traveling across the Bay and returning to the site where they made history. ASU faces-off with California on Sunday, March 31 at 12:00 p.m. A season ago, Emily Glagolev scored an overtime goal as the program earned its first-ever victory over a Pac-12 opponent in Berkeley.
