TEMPE – The Sun Devils' first road trip of the outdoor season included a couple of wins from Bianca Tinoco and William Paulson in the 1,500-meter runs, Friday at the Stanford Invitational.
Paulson lined up for his Sun Devil outdoor debut in the invitational section of the 1,500 in Palo Alto and managed to outclass the elite field by running an NCAA-leading mark of 3:42.53 to win the section.
His mark already puts him at fifth in school history and within two seconds of Chuck LaBenz' 49-year-old record. Although the time wasn't a personal best for the indoor mile All-American, Paulson's mark from Friday night was his fastest season-opening time in his collegiate career by nearly four seconds.
The sophomore Tinoco did set a personal best on her way to winning section seven of the 1,500, crossing the line in 4:28.12, the best by a Sun Devil this season.
John Reniewicki dropped a huge personal best in the 5,000-meter run when he finished under 14 minutes for the first time and became the first Sun Devil to do so since 2016. His 13:55.90 is ASU's fastest outdoor 5,000 time since 2015.
Over in Texas on Thursday, Matthew Eckles cleared 5.15m/16-10.75 feet to finish sixth in the pole vault at the Texas Relays.
Up the road from Palo Alto at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, Daan Haven and Megan Reniewicki finished 13th and 15th, respectively, in section two of the women's 5,000.
Next up for the Sun Devils will be Arizona State's final home meet of the season. The 40th Sun Angel Classic is a two-day event that gets going Friday afternoon. For seniors Paulson, John Reniewicki and Eckles, the home finale will be their final home meet donning the pitchfork.
