TUCSON, Ariz. – Despite close matches throughout the day, Arizona State beach volleyball came up short in both matches at the Pac-12 South Tournament today, falling in sweeps to No. 1 UCLA and No. 11 California.
 
The Sun Devils fall to 2-3 on the season after losing to two of the top teams in the country. In the match against Cal, ASU took two of the courts to three sets. Kate Baldwin and Samantha Plaster, the No. 4 pair against the Bears, were within two points in every set, including a 23-21 third set in which they fell short.
 
Match One – No. 1 UCLA 5, ASU 0
The top team in the nation proved to be too much for the Sun Devils to handle. The No. 1 and No. 3 pairs had close matches on their courts. The top pair of Katelyn Carballo and Oluoma Okaro had a few close sets, losing 21-17 and 21-18. Katie Cross and Ellyson Lundberg played their Bruin duo tough, falling 21-18 in both sets. Every match went to two sets in the sweep.

5) Izzy Carey/Lindsey Sparks (UCLA) def. Natalie Braun/Kara Woodard (ASU) 21-11, 21-16
 
Match Two – No. 11 Cal 5, ASU 0
The second match saw the Sun Devils battle tooth and nail. The matches on courts four and five both went to three sets after Cal took the first sets. Samantha Plaster and Sam Baldwin were within two in every set of their match, including when they ultimately lost 23-21 in the third set. Emily Anderson and Lauren Weintraub came up short in the third set, 15-5.

The Pac-12 South Tournament will wrap up tomorrow for Arizona State with a matchup against Washington at 12:45 p.m. MST. The match will be on the Pac-12 Network.
