CHANHASSEN, Minn. -- Sun Devil Hockey junior goaltender Joey Daccord was voted as one of the five finalists for the 2019 Mike Richter Award, announced Let's Play Hockey on Thursday. He becomes the first Arizona State goaltender to be named a finalist for the coveted award.
The Mike Richter Award annually recognizes the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men's hockey. Candidates for the Mike Richter Award were determined by nominations from all 60 NCAA Division I men's hockey head coaches. The finalists and winner are selected by a committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media.
The other four finalists include Jake Kielly (Clarkson), Hunter Shepard (Minnesota Duluth), Cayden Primeau (Northeastern) and Andrew Shortridge (Quinnipiac). Three are in the Midwest Regional in Allentown this weekend, with Daccord and Shortridge meeting in round one.
In his junior campaign, Daccord started every game for the Sun Devils, posting a 21-12-1 record, .926 save percentage and an NCAA-leading seven shutouts. Among the other five finalists, Daccord ranks tied for second in wins (21), first in shutouts (7), first in minutes (2032:51) and first in saves (994) during the regular season.
He posted five 40-plus save performances, one of which came in an upset overtime victory over then-No. 6 Penn State.
The Ottawa Senators' 2015 draft pick holds a 3.45 cumulative GPA as a business major with a focus in sports & media studies.
The winner will be presented on Friday, April 12 at the 2019 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Buffalo, N.Y.
