QUICK FACTS
The Sun Devils swept three of the four weekly Pac-12 honors, as Cierra Runge (swimmer), Ashley McCool (diving) and Youssef Selim (diving) all took home their respective player of the week accolades. The wins came after the the Arizona meet in which the men won and the women set two school records. Selim joined diver David Hoffer, who was also named Pac-12 Diver of the Week in January.
Five men will represent the Sun Devils at the 2019 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas this week. All five men have qualified for three events in Zach Poti (50 free, 100 back, 200 back), Grant House (200 IM, 200 free, 200 breast), Carter Swift (50 free, 100 free, 200 free), Youssef Selim (1M, 3M, PL) and David Hoffer (1M, 3M, PL). The championships appearance is the first of Swift's career.
THERE'S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Carter Swift is set to make his first National Championship appearance this season in his first year at Arizona State after transferring from Eastern Michigan.
In just one season at Arizona State, Swift has twice put himself on the top-10 times list in the 100 free while also setting serveral personal bests in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free once under the tutelage of the ASU coaching staff.
FOR THE RECORD
Zach Poti puncuated a successful Pac-12 Championships performance with a school record in the 100 back as well as a Pac-12 Championship in the event. Poti became the first male Sun Devil to race to a conference championship in the 100 back, and also got an automatic bid to compete in the NCAA National Championships in Austin as his time of 44.93 secured him an A-Cut as well the Arizona State record in the event. His time is currently the sixth-best in Division I swimming.
Poti achieved honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 back in 2018 and will look to improve on that finish.
THE STACKED-12
The conference of champions really is just that in swimming, as all six of the men's member schools and six of the nine women's member schools are ranked in the final edition of the TYR/CSCAA Division I Coach's Poll.
On the women's side, the conference is tied for the most on the list with the ACC and SEC. On the men's side, the conference is tied for the second-most on the list, second only to the SEC with seven schools ranked.
ALL-AMERICAN
Two former All-Americans return to Austin looking to build on their past performances in Grant House and Zach Poti. House was a 2018 All-American in the 200 free (honorable mention) and 800 free relay (honorable mention) while Poti achieved the status in the 100 back (honorable mention) and 400 medley relay (honorable mention).
AT THE TOP IT ISN'T LONELY
Two Sun Devils hold times that are top-8 in the country in Grant House in the 200 free and Zach Poti in the 100 back, both notching the sixth-best times in their events. Poti's time in the 200 back is also 11th in Division I swimming.
HOMECOMING
The Sun Devils added a new coach to the staff in the offseason -- #SunDevil4Life Herbie Behm.
Behm returns to Tempe after serving as the assistant sprints coach at the University of Utah for two seasons. During his tenure in Salt Lake, Behm led a group of 20+ student-athletes in their daily training programs while assisting and working with each individuals' technique, training strategies and post-race analysis. Under Behm's tutelage, 20 student-athletes set school records in just two seasons.
Behm, a Tucson-native, swam at Arizona State from 2010-13. Excelling in the classroom as well, Behm was a three-time Scholar-Athlete Award winner and graduated with his degree in Psychology while minoring in Communications. As a Sun Devil, Behm was a part of the foursome that set the school record in the 400 medley relay.
