PALO ALTO, Calif. – Arizona State dropped its first road match of the Pac-12 season, 5-2, Friday when it took on fifth-ranked Stanford in Palo Alto, California.
"Obviously there was another quality opponent out there today in last year's national champion, Stanford," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "The girls played well and I thought we played a great doubles point, which is always a strong point for us."
The Sun Devils continued their dominance in doubles play, picking up wins on courts one and three once again to take a 1-0 lead on the No. 5 team in the nation heading into singles play.
Court two went the way of the Cardinal as they fielded the No. 20 duo in the nation against the Sun Devils' pairing. No. 6 John-Baptiste/Hattingh earned its third-straight win over a ranked duo, defeating No. 11 Lampl/Yee 6-4 to secure the doubles point moments after Hampton/Alicea picked up their third-straight win as a tandem.
"The girls are very confident and clear and know what they need to do," Langley said. This helps them on the big points, as they're never second-guessing themselves and can always stay aggressive."
Although Ilze Hattingh recorded the upset on court one to extend the Devils' lead over the Cardinal, Stanford battled back to eventually advance to 9-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Hattingh handled No. 41 Melissa Lord, upending Stanford's court-one woman 6-1, 6-2. The win snapped Hattingh's two-match losing streak and lifted her to 5-2 on the season.
"Ilze had a great win today, picking up a straight set win over a ranked opponent," Langley said. "She came out aggressively and was able to sustain a high level throughout the entire match."
The Devils dropped to 5-7 (0-3) and will head up Interstate 880 to take on 14th-ranked California in Berkeley Saturday at noon.
"We'll rest up and recover tonight and be ready to go for a rematch against a good Cal team tomorrow," Langley said.
ASU faced Cal earlier this season as a part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbia, South Carolina. The Bears defeated the Devils, 4-1, in their last meeting.
