TEMPE – Fresh off of her first NCAA Championships appearance, Sun Devil senior Jessica Barreira made history under the lights at Sun Angel Stadium when she set the school record in the javelin throw Friday to conclude the first day of the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe.
Barreira's record-setting heave came on her second attempt of the evening. The javelin soared 50.46m/165-6 feet, nearly two meters farther than the previous school record held by ASU hall of famer and seven-time NCAA champion Jacquelyn Johnson since 2008.
She wasn't the only Devil to move up on the javelin list as Cerah Moren put her name at No. 4 in history in her first appearance in maroon and gold with a throw of 46.11m/151-3 feet.
"For Jessica to open her season by setting a school record is outstanding," director of track and field Greg Kraft said. "Having Cerah Moren throw in the low 150s means she could score in the Pac-12 Championships, so now we have a group of throwers with Seri Geisler and Melanie Johnson who could pick up some important points for us come the conference meet."
Both Barreira and Moren's marks would have qualified them for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in 2018, and both Devils find themselves in the top-10 on the 2019 list at this point in the outdoor season.
Tommi Hintnaus opened her sophomore outdoor campaign with a third-place finish in the pole vault. Her clearance of 3.88m/12-8.75 feet means she now owns spots in the top-10 in the indoor and outdoor pole vault with her mark today placing her at eighth in school history.
"I think it's clear that we'll be really heavy in the field events this year on the women's side," Kraft said. "We have improved on the track, though, and that's something that was evident in some of the races we saw today."
Senior Alexandra Williams set a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles when she finished fourth in 13.90 seconds, and Jeminise Parris finished just behind her in fifth.
"I thought that was a very good run from Alex and Jeminise," Kraft said. "It was a personal best for Alex and a far better effort from Jeminise than what we saw in the indoor season, so that's promising for the sprints group moving forward."
Bianca Tinoco ran a one-second PR in the 1,500, finishing sixth overall while Alexis Nichols took 10th.
The second and final day of the Baldy Castillo Invitational will get underway at 10:30 a.m. PT as the men's pole vault opens Saturday's contests. Steven Champlin will lead the line for the men's squad, making his Sun Devil debut in the 400-meter dash, and Samantha Noennig will open her outdoor season in the women's discus.
