LAS VEGAS – The Sun Devil men's basketball team came up short in its bid to advance to the championship game of the Pac-12 Tournament, falling to Oregon 79-75 in overtime in Friday's second semifinal game.
Four Sun Devils scored in double figures, led by Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Luguentz Dort, who had 16 points to go with five rebounds and two assists. Rob Edwards had 15 points and Zylan Cheatham and Remy Martin had 14 points each for the Sun Devils (22-10), who came back from a 12-point, first-half deficit to lead by as many as nine in the second half.
Martin and Cheatham scored 10 points apiece in the second half to help lead ASU's comeback. Martin, who strained his groin early in the first half, would go on to play 31 minutes in the game.
Cheatham (nine rebounds) and Romello White (seven rebounds) combined for 16 rebounds to lead ASU's effort on the boards. As a team, ASU was edged by Oregon 38-37 in total rebounds.
The Ducks also placed four played in double-digit scoring totals with Louis King (19 points) and Payton Pritchard (17 points) leading the way.
"I thought it was an outstanding college basketball game," ASU head coach Bobby Hurley said. "We don't have anything to be ashamed of, the way the guys competed and fought.
"And especially after not starting the game very well and having a huge deficit early to… I loved the response of the team and how we fought to get ourselves back in the game."
After falling behind by nine early in the second half, the Sun Devils regrouped and stormed back with a 21-3 run in the space of only 6:27. Martin and Edwards both hit a pair of 3-pointers during the scoring burst. Edwards' triples culminated the scoring run and put the Sun Devils up 49-40 with 12:22 remaining.
In a game that was replete with momentum shifts, the Ducks answered back with 10-2 run that cut ASU's lead 51-50 after Will Richardson's layup.
The Sun Devils responded with an 8-2 run, the last six points of which came on free throws to give ASU a 59-52 advantage with 8:14 left in the game. The Sun Devils maintained the seven-point lead after two more free throws by Martin put ASU in front 64-57 with 4:34 remaining.
The see-saw contest would see another dramatic turn as the Ducks rallied, scoring 10 of the game's next 13 points to knot the score at 67-67.
Neither team scored over the last 94 seconds of regulation and the game went to overtime.
A 7-0 run by the Ducks early in the extra session put the Sun Devils in a 76-68 hole. They would get within three after Edwards knocked down three free throws to cut the deficit to 78-75 with 58 seconds left.
White's block on the opposite end gave the Sun Devils a chance to tie the game. Dort got an open look but his attempt to knot the score just missed and the Ducks came away with the rebound and clinched the win by hitting one more free throw.
