TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 8 Sun Devil Women's Water Polo took the early lead and their scoring attack heated up even more after halftime as they defeated No. 22 Indiana, 10-5, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) action.
Maud Koopman put the Sun Devils on the board just over two minutes into the match and the score would hold until 2:53 remaining in the half when Lieke Rogge put ASU up, 2-0.
The Hoosiers (5-11) pulled within one, 2-1, with 1:39 left in the second quarter, which would be the halftime score.
After scoring just two goals in the entire first half, ASU's scoring attack heightened in the third and fourth quarters, scoring four goals apiece in both the third and fourth quarters.
The Sun Devils led, 5-1, before Indiana scored their next goal with 41 seconds left in the third quarter. Bente Rogge scored her third goal of the quarter just 16 seconds later to give ASU a 6-2 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Koopman scored her second of the game just under a minute into the fourth quarter and despite three Indiana goals in the fourth quarter, ASU would cruise to victory with two goals in the final 47 seconds after an IU timeout. The teams combined for eight goals in the first three quarters and seven in the final quarter.
In goal, Bridget Johnston played the entire contest, gathering 11 saves in the win while Indiana's Mary Askew made nine saves in the loss.
Koopman's two goals moved her into fourth on ASU's all-time list for career goals scored (160), a list she has rocketed up during her senior year. She needs 15 more goals to move into a tie for third.
