TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State Lacrosse team recently wrapped up a five-game homestand and hits the road for the first time this season, taking on a pair of Pac-12 foes. The first stop is in Eugene, where the Sun Devils will face Oregon on Friday at 5 p.m. The team will then head to Boulder for a matchup on Sunday at 12 p.m. with No. 23 Colorado.
Coming off a weekend in which they dropped a pair of matchups against high-caliber opponents, the Sun Devils look to re-group as they continue conference play. Coach Courtney Martinez Connor's squad looks to pick up where they left off last year, when they won five games on the road.
"We face different challenges every week," Coach Martinez Connor explained. "The first road game of a season is one of those challenges."
Arizona State has relied heavily on a balanced attack, featuring eight different players who have scored at least four goals. Kerri Clayton and Emily Glagolev both sit in the Top-25 in the conference, having recorded a team-best 11 points through five games. Glagolev has been an effective distributor all season long, dishing out six assists, the seventh most in the Pac-12.
The Sun Devils talented freshman class continues to earn more playing time as they gain experience. In total, 11 first-year players have seen playing time so far in 2019 (Kaylon Buckner, Morgan McCaffrey, Paige McGlothlin, Mallory Martel, Olivia Kroah, Olivia Hood, Kara Antonucci, Katie Brodsky, Erica Odell, Cabrini Class, Sydney Payne). Despite being new to the collegiate level, the freshman class continues to produce. They have combined for 10 goals, six assists, 44 ground balls, 18 caused turnovers, and 23 draw controls. Additionally, sophomores Caryn Takeuchi and Mia Harp each tallied their first career points, making their Sun Devil debuts this season after sitting out last season due to injury.
Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau has been a mainstay for Arizona State in net. The key component to the Sun Devils' Pac-12 Conference leading 10.40 goals allowed/game, Bonneau has played all 300 minutes so far this season. She is the only goalkeeper in the conference to hold that distinction. Bonneau has recorded at least nine saves in four of her five starts and gave up only three goals in the fifth game.
There were several positive takeaways from last week despite the 0-2 record. A short-handed Arizona State offense matched their season-high by scoring 14 goals, but the comeback effort wasn't enough as Vanderbilt remained undefeated by virtue of a 15-14 victory. Four Sun Devils scored in double figures (Dougherty, Kroeger, Hunter), led by freshman Paige McGlothlin, who recorded her first-career hat trick. In the Pac-12 opener against No. 22 USC, Berkeley Bonneau posted her third double digit save performance in the loss. Caryn Takeuchi registered her first career assist on Carley Adams' second-half goal in the loss to the Trojans.
The showdown with Oregon is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. and will take place at Papé Field. The Ducks are led by Head Coach Chelsea Gamble, who is in her first season at the helm in Eugene. Gamble is a familiar face to the Sun Devils, as she was an Assistant Coach at Stanford for the past four seasons. The Ducks have won at least nine games in five consecutive seasons and boasted a 5-2 home record last season. So far this season, the Ducks have earned wins against Mercer and Jacksonville while being tested by a challenging schedule. Like the Sun Devils, they also opened Pac-12 play last week, falling to Cal and Stanford during their trip to the Bay Area. Oregon is led by senior attacker Shannon Williams, who currently sits third in the conference with 20 goals. Williams also impacts the game as a distributor, leading the conference with 14 assists.
"Traveling during our fall schedule helped us prepare for our first trip, but these games have a different meaning and importance," Coach Martinez Connor added. "I look forward to seeing how we grow as a team as a result of this trip."
A quick turnaround has the Sun Devils heading to Boulder to take on Colorado on Sunday at 12 p.m at Kittredge Field. The contest will be broadcasted live on Pac-12 Network Mountain and is available to be streamed throughout the Pac-12 Digital platforms. The Buffaloes are led by Head Coach Ann Elliott Whidden, who is in the midst of her sixth season in charge of the Buffaloes Lacrosse program. The defending Pac-12 regular season conference champions are coming off a 14-6 campaign, including a 9-1 conference record. The Buffaloes defeated Jacksonville in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament to earn their first ever NCAA Tournament victory. Colorado currently sits at No. 23 in the latest IWCLA Poll after a 3-3 start to the season. They have already knocked off a pair of Top-15 teams on the road, taking down No. 14 Virginia Tech in mid-February before upsetting No. 15 Stanford a week ago. Before taking on ASU, Colorado battles USC in a Top-25 matchup on Friday. Buffaloes Attacker Miranda Stinson represents one of the most prolific offensive threats in the country, scoring 21 goals in 2019, the second most in the Pac-12. Stinson is the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week.
The matchup with the Ducks will be available to be streamed live courtesy of the Oregon Digital Stream. The Sun Devils will make their Pac-12 Network debut on Sunday when they take on the No. 23 Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder. The game is exclusively on Pac-12 Mountain Network (available in Utah & Colorado), but can be streamed live through the Pac-12 Digital platforms and the Pac-12 Now App. For more information on how to access the broadcast, click here.
