FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Two more Sun Devil divers qualified to compete in the National Championships later this month, as both Youssef Selim and David Hoffer qualified for the three meter springboard event this afternoon. The qualification is Selim's second of the week and third of his career in three meter.
Arizona State is one of two schools to qualify multiple divers in a single event through two days of competition, joining fellow Pac-12 school Stanford in sending two competitors to NCAAs today. Showcasing the diving talent within the conference, Pac-12 schools have combined to take eight of the nine qualification spots so far on the men's side in a Zone E Championship including universities from the Mountain West, MPSF and WAC conferences.
Selim again put up another strong performance on day two, taking first place in the preliminary round for the second-straight day. Hoffer joined him in the finals after taking ninth, and the two looked to place in the top-five to earn a qualifying spot to NCAAs.
Both divers quick placed within the qualifying range and never dropped out, with Selim sitting in first right from the beginning and Hoffer bouncing between fourth and fifth place.
Selim finished the finals in first place with a combined score of 794.25. That mark is the highest score in the three meter at the Zone E Championships since 2016, and his margin of victory over second place (61.90) was the largest since 2014. The bid is the Egyptian's third-straight in three meter in three years as a Sun Devil, and his second so far this week after qualifying for one meter yesterday.
Hoffer took fourth place overall in the finals after putting up a combined score of 691.45. The qualification in three meter is Hoffer's third of his career.
On the women's side, both Frida Kaellgren and Ashley McCool again qualified for the final round after the women had placed 13th and 17th, respectively, in the preliminary round earlier this morning. With the top-8 finalists taking a qualifying spot, McCool sat in eighth place while Kaellgren sat in 12th with one dive left.
McCool ended the finals in 9th place, missing a qualifying spot by one point while Kaellgren finished just behind her in 10th place.
Sun Devil diving is back in action for the final day of the Zone E Championships. Both men and women will be competing in the platform event, and fans can keep up with the action by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
