FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Silja Kansakoski (100 breast) and Youssef Selim (Platform) both added Pac-12 Championships on day three of the 2019 Pac-12 Championships. Kansakoski's is her second conference title in the 100 breast in three seasons, while Selim's title tonight is his second this year after defending his one-meter title on day one.
THE DETAILS
Silja Kansakoski added her second Pac-12 Championship in the 100 breast in three years tonight. She entered the evening session as the number one seed after winning the preliminary session, touching the wall at 59.12 in the championship heat for the top mark. As is, Kansakoski's time of 59.12 is the ninth-fastest time in Division I swimming in the 100 breast.
The Sun Devil women sit in fourth place through three days with 644 points. With the Territorial Cup Series point on the line tomorrow, ASU currently holds a 68 point lead over the Wildcats in fifth place.
Youssef Selim and David Hoffer both qualified for the final round of the men's platform event, with Selim notching his second Pac-12 Championship of the year tonight. The Egyptian is the first to record two or more men's Pac-12 Diving Championships since 2015, and Hoffer notched a third place finish in all three diving events (one meter, three meter and platform).
With men's diving wrapped up, the Sun Devil men's swimming squad will head into the Men's Swimming Pac-12 Championships next week with 83 points, good for first place, due to diving.
STRAIGHT FROM THE COACHES
Head Swimming Coach Bob Bowman:
We definitely expected that out of Silja. She's getting back to her swims that she had in 2017 when she won her first title so that was really good to see from her tonight.
We had some very strong swimming this morning again which is important. We had some people really step up in the consolation heats who are putting up best times this morning and then coming back at night and swimming even faster. I was really pleased at the rate of people making finals abd then swimming faster in the finals.
I think we're doing well. We just have to finish out strong. Good job to our divers who dove really well today. It's been a great effort so far. Being in first really helps, and it's nice to know that we have some cushion over these other teams heading into the men's championships next weekend. Hats off to coach Bradshaw and those guys.
Heading Diving Coach Mark Bradshaw:
Youssef did what he needed to do to get the job done today. He had one dive today that he did really well that he hasn't been recently, so that was really key for him winning.
David did enough to take third again. He had some really good dives, but it was kind of like his three-meter where the door was open for him to place even higher than he did. However, when you're in third place in every event at the conference level, that's really good.
Looking toward zones, I'm looking forward to them diving even better. They placed well at Pac-12s, but they're need to going to dive well at Zones to advance onto the NCAA Championships.
Our guys putting us in first heading into next weekend is huge. Giving us a lead before going into the swimming is a goal of ours every year.
Ashley was just a little off today. She didn't dive her best and was off on one dive. We have to get back and do better diving these next couple weeks with the Zone meet and NCAAs in a couple weeks.
