FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Sun Devil men's swimming started off their Pac-12 Championships on a high note, outperforming their seed in both relays en route to two NCAA A-Cuts on the first night of the Men's Swimming Pac-12 Championships. The men sit in first place after day one with a total of 187 points.
ASU improved on their fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay from last year, with the all-underclassmen foursome of Zach Poti-Elijah Warren-Khalil Fonder-Evan Carlson racing to a third place finish in the first event of the week.
The mens' time of 1:24.20 was also just one-tenth of a second off the school record of 1:24.08 set in 2017, but good for the second-best time in program history. It did, however, secure the first NCAA A-Cut for the Sun Devil men.
The 800 free relay rounded out night one, with the Sun Devils sending yet another all-underclassmen relay squad of Grant House-Carter Swift-Tyler Zuyus-Ethan Luc to the block.
Sophomore House put up the fastest opening leg out of the nine relay squads, racing to an overall time of 6:18.07 to secure another A-Cut for the Sun Devils. The mark is good for fifth place in ASU history.
After one day, the Sun Devils sit in first place atop the Pac-12 with a total of 187 points, 27 points ahead of second place Stanford. ASU is back in action tomorrow morning, with prelims for the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free beginning at noon MST. Fans can keep up with the action all week long by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
