STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 9 Sun Devil Wrestling team held the lead with three bouts to go but dropped the final three as No. 12 Stanford earned a 21-15 win in a Pac-12 Conference match Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinal won the first three bouts, building a 10-0 lead before the Sun Devils followed suit with four straight wins, two by bonus points. No. 17 Christian Pagdilao picked up ASU's first win at 157 lbs., a 11-9 decision in sudden victory over a top-25 opponent in No. 18 Dominick Mandarino.
No. 4 Josh Shields (165) and No. 2 Zahid Valencia (174) earned back-to-back bonus point victories just before and just after halftime as Shields won by major decision, 16-6, and Valencia won by tech fall, 23-8. ASU took the lead, 12-10, through six bouts.
The Sun Devils built their lead, 15-10, with their fourth consecutive win after Jacen Petersen earned a 5-2 decision at 184 lbs. before giving up the lead over the remainder of the contest.
Valencia has won his last 14 matches while Shields has recorded victories in his last 11.
The Sun Devils return home for the remainder of the regular season with three straight duals before hosting Pac-12 Championships Saturday, Mar. 9. Their next dual is a top-25 matchup vs. Missouri Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m., set to air on Pac-12 Networks.
