BERKELEY, Calif. – Behind a solid outing from Cairo Leonard-Baker, No. 19 Arizona State gymnastics took second place with a 195.700, earning a win over No. 14 BYU, in a tri-meet in Haas Pavilion on Saturday night.
"I thought it was a competitive, exciting meet tonight," Arizona State head coach Jay Santos said. "We got off to a good start on bars and we were able to avoid the early fall on beam and put together another strong rotation there. Floor got away from us a little and we did not perform up to what we are capable of doing. Thankfully, the team was able to bring it back together on vault and finish the meet on a high note."
The Gym Devils (4-4) scored above their season average of 195.656 in their second-place finish tonight. Despite falling to No. 18 Cal, Arizona State took down No. 14 BYU for the second top-25 win of the year. ASU scored a 49.000 on both bars and beam, tying for the best event totals of the night for the squad.
"It was a good meet from us, but I know this team is capable of performing even better," Santos said. "Moving forward, we are going to have to execute stronger and put a complete meet together from start to finish. I feel that we are close to that kind of performance and we see it in practice. They just need to come together as a group and do it at meet time."
Not far from her hometown of Oakland, Cairo Leonard-Baker took second in the all-around with a 39.350. She scored a 9.825 or better in every event and tied for the individual bars title with a 9.875. On bars and floor, she has yet to score less than a 9.825 this season.
