SEATTLE – Arizona State earned four top-three finishes and five other athletes scored for the Sun Devils Friday at the first day of the MPSF Championships in Seattle.

The women's weight throw has been one of ASU's best events in the past five years, and 2019's contest provided the Devils with an early spark inside the Dempsey Indoor Facility.

The Sun Devils opened the day by scoring nine points in the weight throw with efforts from All-Americans Beatrice Llano and Kaylee Antill. The former finished third in the event with a throw of 20.04m/65-9.00 feet, and Antill took sixth with her mark of 18.78m/61-7.50.

"Beatrice was recovering from an ankle sprain and coach Blu always says you have to grind the ground a little bit more in the weight so I'm proud of her for getting through that today," coach Greg Kraft said. "Kaylee always shows up when we need her to, and she did it again today."

For Antill, it was the junior's third-straight all-MPSF honor, and the newcomer Llano scored her first points at an indoor conference championship.

The first men's points of the day came on the track from newcomer Fearghal Curtin. The sophomore had an impressive MPSF debut in the men's 5,000-meter run, finishing third in the event in 13:58.60. His six points came a few minutes after Daan Haven finished seventh in the women's 5,000 and scored two crucial points for the Sun Devils.

"Daan has been great this year and was great all cross country season, so she's been kind of the steady influence for us this year in the distances," Kraft said. "Fearghal was highlight for the men today. He's been a nice addition for us and did a great job of managing that 5,000 to get those points for the team."

ASU wasn't done scoring on the track, though, as Josephine Anokye put up one of the fastest 200-meter dash times on the day and left Dempsey Indoor with three points and her first all-conference honor with the Devils.

In his final MPSF Championship, senior Matthew Eckles recorded his highest finish indoors Friday in the men's pole vault. The former Pac-12 champion finished third with a clearance of 5.22m/17-1.50 feet. He wasn't alone on the scoresheet as sophomore Michael Chadwick made it two-straight years of scoring in Seattle when he finished fifth to give the Devils 10 points overall in the men's vault.

"Matt's always been a great competitor, and he's kind of been the unsung hero for us," Kraft said. "He did it again for us today when it counted."

The success in the jumps continued for the Devils when Jessica Barreira and Derrick Monroe both scored in the women's and men's long jump, respectively.

Barreira came into the meet as the three-seed in the event, and wrapped up her day with a bronze as she jumped 6.16m/20-2.50 feet to earn six points. Simultaneously on the adjacent runway, Monroe put together a series that earned him sixth place and his first all-MPSF honor.

Despite just missing out on a place in the women's 60-meter hurdles final by one-thousandth of a second, senior Alexandra Williams ran a lifetime best 8.42 in the prelims that moved her to ninth in school history.

The 2019 MPSF Championships continue Saturday in Seattle. Erika Voyzey and Katie Eidem open the day in the women's high jump at 11 a.m. MST. The NCAA's women's shot put leader Samantha Noennig will take to the circle at 11:30 a.m., and William Paulson will attempt the mile, 800 double Saturday afternoon.
