TEMPE, Ariz. - In a down-to-the-wire matchup, the Maroon team earned a narrow 3-2 victory over the Gold team in the annual Sun Devil beach volleyball Maroon and Gold Scrimmage Friday night at the PERA Club.
"I like that our team battled all night," head coach Brad Keenan said. "Some of our teams came out really slow, but their game two was much better than their game one. So just a good overall battle from all of them. I think the fact that two of our games went to three sets was a good showing for the whole team."
Action started off with the Maroon and Gold squads each taking one match in straight sets. For Gold, the No. 2 pair of Kendall Cady and Tabitha Keever earned the first point over Carmen Unzue and Cassidy Schilling, 21-13, 21-19. No. 1 Bailey Anderson and Madeline Salazar quickly answered with a point for Maroon, defeating Sierra Ellett and Halle Johnson, 21-10, 21-18.
In the second round of action, two matches went to three sets as the Maroon and Gold kept it close until the very end. At No. 5, Emily Anderson and Lauren Weintraub swept Natalie Braun and Kara Woodard in two sets, 21-14, 21-15, earning a second win for the Maroon squad.
The No. 3 pair of Katelyn Carballo and Olluoma Okaro and earned a hard-fought win for the Gold squad over Cierra Flood and Ashley Wenz, 19-21, 21-13, 17-15 to tie things up with action continuing on one court.
At No. 4, Kate Baldwin and Samantha Plaster defeated Katie Cross and Ellyson Lundberg in three sets, 16-21, 21-16, 17-15, to secure the victory for the Maroon squad.
The Sand Devils begin their 2019 season next Saturday, February 23, as they take on Loyola Marymount, New Mexico and Grand Canyon at GCU's campus. Fans can follow the action by following @SunDevilBeachVB on Instagram and Twitter.
