TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 9 Arizona State wrestling team started off strong but fell to the No. 5 Michigan Wolverines, 23-12, Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils stormed ahead to a 12-0 lead early with decisions by No. 15 Christian Pagdilao (157), No. 5 Josh Shields (165), No. 2 Zahid Valencia (174) and Jacen Petersen (184).
The Wolverines got on the board as No. 18 Jackson Striggow took the 10-6 decision over Austyn Harris at 197 lbs., bringing the score to 12-3 in favor of the Sun Devils headed into the intermission.
Michigan's Mason Parry pinned Brady Daniel in 5:56 at heavyweight to bring things close at 12-9 and No. 11 Drew Mattin earned a 9-7 decision over Brandon Courtney at 125 lbs. to tie things up at 12.
The Wolverines pulled ahead, 17-12, at 133 lbs. as No. 2 Steven Micic recorded a 17-2 tech fall over No. 20 Josiah Kline in 4:26. They would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the dual.
The Sun Devils spend the next month on the road, heading to Hampton, Va. for the Virginia Duals Jan. 11-12 before duals at Oregon State (Jan. 20), Lock Haven (Jan. 25), Lehigh (Jan. 26) and Stanford (Feb. 2). The squad will then return to Tempe to host Missouri on Friday, Feb. 8.
