TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State women's swim team swept the Washington State Cougars in 13 of 14 events to earn a 174-85 victory in their first Pac-12 meet of the season on Saturday morning at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
"We had good energy, people were really racing well," head coach Bob Bowman said. "It was nice to have Cierra Runge for the first time swim for us. Across the board we swam pretty well."
The Sun Devils finished in order at the top of the scoreboard in 7 events – the 1000 free, 100 back 200 fly, 200 back, 500 free, 100 fly, 200 IM and 800 free relay.
Three Sun Devils had multiple wins on the day, as Emma Nordin (1000 free, 200 back), Cierra Runge (100 back, 100 free) Chloe Isleta (100 back, 200 back), and Fanny Teijonsalo (50 free, 100 fly) each took the top spot in two events. For junior transfer Runge, her two victories came in her first two events as a Sun Devil.
"I had a lot of fun today," Runge said. "Being able to compete finally with the girls, being able to contribute was awesome. I've been there in spirit, but now it's fun to be there (competing)."
Also earning victories for ASU were Silja Kansakoski (100 breast), Ruby Martin (200 fly) and Marlies Ross (200 IM*).
ASU's A teams also took first in both relays – Isleta, Kansakoski, Teijonsalo and Camryn Curry took first in the 200 medley relay, while Nordin, Kendall Dawson, Runge and Ross took first in the 800 free*.
The Cougars' sole victory came in the 200 breast. WSU's Mackenzie Duarte took first, followed by Sun Devils Marlies Ross, Kansakoski and Nora Deleske earning points.
ASU exhibitioned all swimmers for the final two events, the 200 IM and 800 free relay.
The Sun Devils remain in Tempe for the remainder of January, hosting No 1/5 California Friday, Jan. 25 and No. 7/2 Stanford Saturday, Jan. 26. The meet is free to the public and can be viewed on the ASU Live Stream.
