ITHACA, NY – After nearly entering the first intermission scoreless behind a stellar start by netminder Joey Daccord, Friday night's game got away from No. 13 Sun Devil Hockey in a hurry in the final three minutes of the first period at No. 17 Cornell.

The Big Red (8-5-1) fired 26 shots on goal in the first period and only needed to find the net twice in their 6-1 win over the Sun Devils (16-8-1).

"Our guys got outworked," said head coach Greg Powers. "That's a really good team and we dug ourselves a hole mentally in the first period, and that's as poorly as we've played all year.

"We gave ourselves a chance and played a really good second period. Had a tap-in there at the end of the second, and if we get that, it probably changes the landscape of the game."

The Sun Devils' lone goal came on a breakaway by sophomore Johnny Walker for his 19th of the season, which extends his NCAA lead. It is also Walker's 27th point of the season, which breaks the ASU record for points in a season set by Brinson Pasichnuk in 2017-18.

Cornell rattled off three tallies on both sides of Walker's goal with just one coming on the powerplay.

With the score at 2-0 in the second period, a scrum and loose puck in front of Cornell netminder Austin McGrath nearly put ASU back in the game with some momentum, but the Sun Devils weren't fortunate to cut the lead in half.

ASU finished 0-for-3 on the man advantage, while Big Red finished 1-for-3.

Junior netminder Joey Daccord made 45 saves on 50 he faced, which is tied for the most he's made in a game this season. He made 45 saves against Omaha on Dec. 7.

Late in the third, freshman Evan DeBrouwer replaced Daccord for his first collegiate minutes.

The 52 shots allowed by the Sun Devils is the most as a team this season, and the most since allowing 57 against Quinnipiac on Jan. 27, 2017.

Game two is set for Saturday night at 7 p.m. (EST) on ESPN+.
